Help with Student Council Slogan

I came up with DD's slogan when she ran for Student Council. We :snooty: used the Dos Equis campaign:

Put her picture in the middle and it said "I don't always run for Student Council, but when I do I run for Recording Secretary." And then her name under it.

StuCo adviser approved it and she ran on it. Lots of people thought it was cute. BTW, she didn't win but that's not the point.

So kill me for "doing" something for my daughter when she was quite capable enough to handle it herself. She told me she was thinking of running, I came up with the slogan and she said that was great. Thanks for helping. It really is scary how everyone is so afraid of being seen as enabling that they bash everyone else who helps their kids. Whatever, I'm really kind of done with the whole "holier than thou" attitude on the DIS lately.

Carry on with the judging.

And BTW, professional politicians have campaign managers and people who run their campaigns for them. So why is it so bad for a high school kid to ask for a little help?

Say this with me, "helping someone when he/she asks for it is not the same as doing it all for him/her". The op making statements like "my son is running for office and I need help with a slogan" and "last year WE used duck dynasty as a theme" led many including me to believe that more than just a little guidance and direction was going on.

I help my dd14 all the time with all kinds of things but I don't do her work for her.

And comparing a parent running their kid's campaign to the job of a campaign manager is humorous.

What I find humorous is the attitude that this person is getting. It's not like she said he's 16 and she's still wiping his behind for him or brushing his teeth for him. Has it really become such a horrible thing to help our kids and be a little more involved? I would have killed to have my mother more involved in my life when I was growing up. Due to circumstances, I was basically raising myself at times and let me tell you, it was not fun. And while I am probably a more self-sufficient and self-reliant person than perhaps my daughter, she will become that person. I allowed her to have a childhood and to know that I would always find time and be involved because I cared and made choices that made it possible. This whole tough love attitude may just come back to bite some people, just like the coddling/helicoptering will too. I know my mom did the best she could but I swore I would find a way to be a more involved parent for my daughter and I don't think I should have to be judged on the DIS or anywhere else for having done so. And you are all judging the OP by a simple question she asked. Hope everyone is feeling superior. :snooty:

You obviously either didn't read my post or worse didn't comprehend it. Helping = good, doing it for the kid = attachment parenting

I understood exactly what you said. And I also understood your implied attitude that you are somehow a better parent because you take a hands off approach. And your use of "attachment parenting" as a negative just reinforces my original understanding. And here's the bigger question - what do you care? What places you in a position to judge others' parenting styles and decide what is the "right" way and what is the "wrong" way? Everyone is making this out to be some huge thing that it's really not. Not everything has to be the ultimate, life or death decision. It's a poster for Student Council.

Exactly. Not some huge thing. Something a teenager should be able to handle alone.

Thank you to those that were helpful and non judgmental . I will pass along the suggestions to my son and I will continue to help when he asks for it. Apparently I am doing something right he is top of his class with a 4.0 and 28 on ACT at the age of 14.

Boy, did you ever pick the wrong board for that! :rotfl2:

And that makes it better? Maybe if people tried to be a little kinder to each other and a little less judgmental it wouldn't be the way it is. Would it be so hard to be a little more supportive of each other as parents? Not everyone has the same experiences to draw on. It's become all about tearing each other down. And it's sad.

Or a parent should be able to offer an opinion on without being judged by others.

An opinion wasn't what was asked for, by OP or her son. An idea was asked for. For the current school year OP went a lot further than helping her son come up with an idea for a poster.

I still think at this age this is something left to the high schooler and his or her buddies to come up with. Tar me with the holier than thou and the slacker, uninvolved parent brush. Apparently I've earned it. To think I let my HS sophomore come up with potential tshirt designs for her science olympiad team without me just last month. I bet she's got plans to take off for college in two years and ditch me like her sister did.

LOL Of course he is.

Again with the nasty, rude behavior. Guess what? My daughter also has a 4.0 GPA, as of the end of junior year #27 out of a class of 627 and takes honors and AP courses. Didn't do quite as well on the SAT though. Don't believe me? Do a search that the DIS is so famous for. You will see I posted those stats months ago.

I believe that's the point -- easy to have a 4.0 when the parent is doing a large part of the work.

And of course only those who can come up with their own tshirt design are cut out for college. The rest of them will be home picking up garbage from outside your house and slinging burgers for your lunch. :rolleyes1

OMG how could I be so stupid? Of course that's it! The parents are obviously going to school and taking all the children's tests too and giving presentations and participating class. Forgive me for not catching that! I am truly humbled by your obviously superior intellect and parenting skills. I'll be sure to tell my daughter there's no need for college because she is truly doomed by the mother who raised her. :worship::worship::worship::worship::worship:

BTW, for those lurking, I'd just like to say "Yes my kid is that fabulous" Carry on to all those who are hiding behind their screens.

Guess what? I have TWO of those oh-so-rare-on-the-Dis perfectly average, normal kids that don't get perfect grades. Contrary to popular belief here, those kids really do exist. :faint:
