help with SIL

we were not the ones to put my MIL in the middle . we called my SIL and told her what we found out and she hung up and had my MIL call us back to get all the details. we have tried and tried to help my SIL only to be spurned. I don't want to cause her more distress. I am in the medical field and knew two years ago this child needed help. I talked to my SIL and she did not want to listen. the problems were not addressed till niece locked herself in the bedroom with a knife. When her daughter went to the hospital the 1st time last year we offered to come and babysit her other child or take him to our house for the day. We want to help but can't. We have tried to offer help. We don't care about the money we are just tired of being told it's SIL's problem and she can go it alone. I am terrified that this child will suceed in harming herself. MIL was just here and I told her to please have SIL call us for anything even just to vent

my husband is ready to write his family off but he too is very upset with his father's death and will eventually calm down and see things more rationally. We did not go to pick the things up because I work nights and haven't slept yet today. the phone is needed ASAP because of business

Well prayers for your entire family...that's a lot to deal with in such a short time. I hope your niece gets the help she needs to get her life back on track, and I hope your SIL gets some help, too.

my SIL tells us through my MIL that she can cope by herself. SIL won't answer phone to talk to us

Oh goodness that is terrible--I cannot believe that your SIL is being so closed minded on her daughters health.

I would be more than happy to accept "help" if I needed some advice with a situation such as this and I had someone, especially someone in the medical field willing to talk with me.

It sounds as if SIL has a lot on her plate right now. The kind thing to do would be to back off, let it lie, and be there for support for her if she asks for it.
