I am trying to install a router for my DS to play xbox live.

I've got it all set up and I have internet access to my computer but I dont have a connection to the xbox. The wires are all in place but the xbox says there is no connection.

I configured the IP address for my computer for the router,so that part works, but how to I get it to recognize the xbox?

It has taken me over 2 hours to get this far and I am getting very frustrated.

Any help is greatly apprecieated. THanks

Its a hard wired router and I am using windows xp if that helps

You're not using a "system link" cable are you? Also the router should automatically assign an IP address to your PC you shouldn't have to do it. If you go into the router software do you see the Xbox connected?

do you have an adress hard coded into your computer or did you let it get one automatically?

I dont know what you mean my system link cable, and I dont see anywhere the xbox is connected.

And I did use the automatically assign IP.

The router signal is lit up for my computer, but not for the wire for the xbox

Thanks

If the router is not lit for the Xbox cable then take the cable from your PC and see if it works for the xbox. It sounds like you're using what is called a "cross-over cable" not a "patch cable". If that works then just go to your local Best Buy or something and get a Cat 5 patch cable.

ok this is what we did already

I already know that the cable line works in the xbox because we had it hooked up to play before I bought the router.

My DH is an electrician and he has Cat 5 wire, he ran a wire for the xbox and made another one from the modem to the router.

If that patch cord is wrong, I wouldnt have internet at all, right?

Thanks

My point is you know the cable on the PC is working so it is very easy to eliminate the xbox cable by using a known good one. Also if you're using the same cable for the xbox now that you used to hook to the modem before you got the router then it is a "cross-over cable" and is wrong.

Let me explain it another way

Depending on router/modem brand, most often there is a crossover cable between modem and router (and hooked to the WAN port on the router).

From router to PC/Xbox always a straight cable.

Hold the two ends of a cable together with same side up.
If both have the same colour-sequence from left to right, it is a straight cable, otherwise a crossover cable.

What is the difference between a cross over cable and a patch cable? :confused3

Are the wires different?

Thanks

a crossover cable is used when trying to network two devices without a router.

OK then check the manual for the router, because almost all routers require a cross-over cable from the modem to the WAN port on the router. The router usually comes with one. Without the cross-over between the modem and router it just acts as a pass thru from the modem to your pc. The cross-over will enable multiple connections thru the router.

I know nothing about X box, but I do know that when we tried to do this with DS's Nintendo DS, I had to turn off the WPA encryption on my router and switch it to WEP. The DS couldn't handle WPA.

When we 1st hooked up Xbox Live, we had bought an incompatible router. You can check here, paying special attention to the routers that are not compatible. Keep in mind, this is not an all inclusive list, but it might be a place to start.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/connect/routerlanding.htm#routers

Another thing I'll tell you. We just moved and were resetting our Live account up. I did EVERYTHING the way I was suppose to and messed with it for hours with no luck. I finally tried everything else and unplugged my computer and everything for a minute and rebooted and it worked great after that. DUH! LOL If you've not unplugged everything, you might wanna try that too.

Something to remember though is just because a router is not on the list does not make it not compatible. An "Xbox Live Compatible" router is one proven to work by the company and then they pay a fee to Microsoft so they can advertise it as "certified". I have found very few routers that will not work with Xbox Live.
