I am so burnt out and exhausted...having trouble organizing my thoughts on this one. I have to teach HIV/AIDS (my focuses are my choice, just have to consider the audience) at a womens shelter (some have their kids with them). I have to design a bulletin board. Ideas? Please? I am good at school, terrible at creativity. I considered preventions, but don't know if little kids will be there???? I thought about myths vs. facts. Arrggh, I don't know. What do the women there need to know?

I think Myths vs Facts is a great idea.
You could do a little True/ False quiz.
I also think you could discuss this in front of children as long as you did not get overly graphic.

I also wanted to mention that I would think that some of the women may have a low literacy level. So you would want to cater to that:)

That is what is throwing me so much. I will refer to the bulletin board in the presentation, but it's also going to have to be interactive.

For myths/facts, maybe I will put, for example, the words spreads by mosquito bites + picture of one on a flap, then they LIFT THE FLAP to see the word MYTH.

Geez, and my whole group is waiting for me to tell them their parts in the presentation. I don't even know what I am doing with it. This class is so disorganized and chaotic, I can't even think what to make for dinner!

If you are putting this up at a women's shelter - you may have women there who already are HIV positive.

Perhaps putting up phone numbers of where to get tested and what happens if you are HIV positive - what help is available in your community, what charities help people with HIV, how to keep getting your HIV meds if you break up with your abusive spouse and lose your source of income or insurance.

These HIV positive women may have kids and probably want to know how to live longer so they can take care of them. When properly treated HIV isn't the automatic death sentence it used to be - but these women need access to care in order to keep it from becoming one.

Also, if they are pregnant - treatment for the first 6 weeks of life with antiviral medication can pretty reliably save the life of the baby if the mom happens to be HIV positive. But it needs to be started on the first day of life. This is a fairly new development.

The detail I didn't add before is that this also needs to be presented at a womens prison. Those women, many of them, won't have any choices where to get medical treatment since it is done right there. So basically, it needs to be appropriate for BOTH audiences.

I did consider that some will be HIV positive already -- now to think how to include info for them, that both groups can realistically use!
