Help with kitchen floorplan

I wouldn't put the sink dishwasher on the island. There would really be no way to stack (or in my case pile) dishes beside the sink. I'd be worried about things falling off while you are washing and breaking. Also you want your dishwasher to be near the cabinet where the dishes will live. Trust me on this one, it is a pain to have to walk across the kitchen (or even just turn around with the dishes in your hand).

I love, love, love the sink in the island. I am hooked! I am always washing dishes and can talk to people, plus prepare the food and swooosh right into the sink it goes.

What are the demisions of you kitchen?
The floor plan looks very similat to what I've planned, except my frig is oppisite where yours is and my stove is where your frig is. I've decided to go with with arolling island since the kitchen is so small to begin with. JC penny's has one that has a drop leaf that has room for 2 bar stools. I can always roll it out of the way and place a card table and chairs in there to seat more people.

you should be able to change it - no prob
we changed ours significantly from the plans...

I sure hope so. My DH is going to shoot me when he gets home and I tell him what's going through my head. We've been working on these plans for 3 years - yes, I know - I'm indecisive. Luckily, my poor architect only had to deal with me for the past three months. Anyway, some new laws went into affect the first of the year, so we started scrambling trying to get around them. We made the cut-off date, but that kitchen literally got re-designed about a week before we applied for the permits. There were some lighting issues I had in another area of the house, and she did say that minor things could be changed after the fact, just don't go moving walls. She didn't say I couldn't move a cooktop though. :teeth: So, I'm hoping we can do this. I'm really not comfortable with the kids and this island cooktop.

My architect would die if she knew I was considering changing this again. I can't begin to tell you how many revisions we went through on this kitchen!!
Let me tell you, don't let "not bothering your architect" affect you in the least. When this job is over, she will go on to the next one, you, on the other hand, will be using this kitchen day in and day out. I'm assuming your paying a lot to have a kitchen redone (we sure did) and you DESERVE it to be EXACTLY what you want!!

I was reading about your "prep in front of cabinets" issue and tend to agree. We extended our counter across the window so I can prep looking out a window. But depending on your layout, maybe prepping by cabinets is your only option. But, if you island is only for the cooktop, is there room for your to prep there?

I've included pictures of our kitchen remodel (just cuz I love it) and maybe for inspiration. I know everyone's tastes are their own and some ideas we have you may not like, just thought I'd share :teeth:

ps..I took these pictures before Halloween which is the reason for the black/halloween drapes. I change them all year long

I know it's 13' wide - can't remember the length right now, I believe it's 18'

I think mine is about 13x15.I've found a couple of ft make a huge difference in a kitchen. I've tried to work in an island with a prep sink and bar seating but there won't be enough clearence around it. Would never be able to open any surrounding cabnets/frig etc with someone seated there.

Saw a small apartment on TV last night.
The owner writes cake baking/decorating cook books and has this tiny galley kitchen. It was so narrow she could only install one of those new drawer type diswashers. She wouldn't be abld to open a regular dishwasher door all the way. As it was she had to stand to the side to open her freezer. I can't imagine having that small of a space.

Okay - here's the scoop - since nothing structural is being affected, I can move anything I want - just submit a revised drawing to the county so there's no surprises for the inspector, and obviously, revise the electrical plans as well.

So, here's my attempt at a new drawing. What do you think?

BTW, LionQueen, I love your kitchen. It's very pretty. What flooring did you use? I'm wanting some type of multi-colored tile (maybe with more red tones in it), but I really like yours.

My opinion is that if you are going to put in an island, make it a usable space. I think your island is too small for anything, especially for a cook top. I don't see enough room behind or on either side to put anything or to do any prep work. What I would do is either skip the peninsula at the end of the cabinets and go with a set up like lionqueen posted or skip the island and expand the peninsula. We had some friends do a great thing in their kitchen that I am considering for ours. Their peninsula is circular so they can seat 6 people at it and it only takes up 6" more space then the design you have. It provides a HUGE food prep area, too.

I think your new plan is much better. I really think you would have regretted putting your cooktop on such a small island.

Jumping in late, here, but I agree with your new floor plan. I would not want an island that I could not use for either seating or food prep. We have a 8 ft. island with a cooktop/oven combo and a retractable downdraft that seats 5 large barstools comfortably. We eat there every night and it's where our family and friends congregate when they come over. We have also ordered a loveseat to put in the kitchen to include comfortable seating.

I thought about putting the sink and dishwasher in the island, but there were some additional plumbing issues / costs associated with that change, so we went with what we have.
