Help with Iron on?

What is the best process to iron on canvas bags and t-shirts. I tested something on a canvas bag using Wilton transfer paper and half the design stayed on the paper. I tried several different process and it didn't work. Do I need to wash the bag first? is there better products to use out there?

I did a canvas bag for our December trip! I used the canvas sticky transfer paper...no ironing. Got it at ACM in the t-shirt section. I reinforced it by tacking it at the corners and middle sides. It looks great!
