My Grandmother is turning 98 on Nov. 30th and I need some suggestions please. I would like to give her a flowering plant that has a nice scent. The problem is that she is in a nursing home so the plant would need to be low maintenance and not requie sunlight.
Any suggestions?

Hi crazyme5kids!! :flower3:

Wow, Congrats on your Grandmother's upcoming 98th Birthday!! That's awesome!! ::yes:: :sunny:

Hmmm....not sure that I have an answer for you!

How would you feel about a lovely (temporary) floral arrangement, perhaps with some Christmas touches (like cedar boughs, etc.,) for fragrance? Also, you might want to consider some of the fabulous silk arrangements that are available. You can't get much lower maintenance then that! A crystal or decorative dish with pot pourri would scent the air, and you could replace the arrangement seasonally.

I know that's probably not what you had in mind, but it's difficult to grow flowering plants with little or no light. Is the lighting regular incandescent? Would it be possible to have some flourescent lights, or to add a grow light? That would help. :)

Anyone else have some ideas for crazyme5kids? :)

I was thinking a silk arrangement with scented oils or something like that.

A pothos plant is an easy care green plant with low light requirement, pretty too IMO, but not fragrant.....

Happy Birthday to your grandma. How about an african violet or an orchid. I'm not sure if you will find any with a scent.

Does an amiryllis need a lot of light? She always loved to watch those grow before Christmas.

An Amaryllis does appreciate light, especially morning sunlight. Later in the day, if it's very sunny, indirect light is best.

Is there a window sill you could place one on, crazyme5kids? If that's what you'd like to get for her, you could still give it a try! :)

I had a special friend who lived in a nursing home, and the amaryllis bulbs that I gave her always bloomed in whatever light was available. I think they carry their food inside the bulb and so current conditions aren't as important as what they've stored.

Bobbi :D

Thanks all for your help. I decided not to get a plant, my mother had gotten a small Christmas tree for her. I brought her enchiladas (one of her favorite meals) to make her day special.
