Just as the title says, I was hoping to get some ideas of what to put on the supply list for my child's HP letter.
I didn't want the "official" list, I wanted to make something realistic, kind of like a scavenger hunt for some things she can buy or get while we're there.

The letter I've written invited my child out for a special holiday visit to Hogwarts, fyi.

What I'm thinking so far:
Wand (duh, right? :P )
1 chocolate frog
1 choice of animal
1 golden snitch
???

Thank you for any ideas!!!

Stupid question but is this HP supply list letter just something you're doing or is it something that can be done via a third party or Universal?

It's just something I'm doing.
I soaked some paper in coffee and I'm printing an invite letter, supply list, and hogwarts express ticket. And then I bought a "wax" seal on etsy to go on the envelope. I'm going to "mail" it to my child with a stuffed owl. :-D :-D

I agree with CodeGoddess - you're the coolest mom!!

Not sure how much you want to spend, but you can get school robes there which are awesome! Another really cool souvenir we bought was a black fluffy feather pen (quill).

Is she buying these things or are you buying them? If you are helping, then definitely an interactive wand! :P

Other ideas:
a scarf
a pin (there are lot- for example, you can get a pin for each individual house or a pin that has all four houses)
a butterbeer mug
a lanyard (you can get one for a specific house)
feather quill pen

Sooo... Im definitely going to have to stain more paper and reprint the supply list part... I never even thought of a quill pen.. She would love that!
And we have a budget between her and I.. No robes this time..
But she'll bring her Hermoine outfit that I made her for Halloween, so it will be okay.

A lanyard from her fav house at Hogwarts and some pins to go on it. They have chocolate frog pins that smell like chocolate.

A box of Bertie Botts.

Ticket for Hogwarts.

Marauders Map

Scarf from fav house

Pygmy puff (Purple or Pink)

Rememrall

Hermiones time turner necklace

Have fun pixiedust: you are a awesome mom

Can't believe nobody mentioned you should note that "your visit will include lunch at (either Three Broomsticks or Leaky Cauldron)." Plus work in a Butterbeer reference (even though we hated it, it's a must-try).

The interactive wands are worth every single cent of the $50 price tag. Definitely get one and leave time to explore all the interactive elements. It added a whole other layer of experience to the lands.

Any tips on the coffee soaking method? I made up Hogwarts letters for my nephews but haven't attempted the coffee soaking yet. (And since my computer was acting up, I wasn't able to save the letters. I printed out two copies each though so at least I have room for a little error!)

The way I did it was...
-Made coffee
-Poured it into a deep pan big enough for the paper
-Waited for it to cool to room temperature
-I had some thicker paper, and I let each soak for 30mins-1hr
-I laid them out on paper towels to dry and sometimes turned them.

The pages that I let soak for a while, looked a lot better, to me anyway, than the page that I removed right away.
But again, I used thicker paper, so I don't know how well regular printer paper would hold up to soaking.

I printed on them after they were completely dry.

Our visit will include a visit to both Three Broomsticks and the Leaky Cauldron. I didn't feel the need to add them to the supply list... but maybe I should add them to the actual letter..? hmmm

My letter currently says:

"This holiday season, the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is pleased to invite you for a special visit.
The visit term begins December the ... and will conclude December the ....
We hope this letter finds you in good spirits and that you will be able to attend."

It's a super fun idea, mailing it with the owl. Hope you have a fantastic trip!

That letter looks so much fun!!!

I'm sure she'll love it.........:)

So is this basically just a list of souvenirs she can get? I think you wrote that the letter will come with an owl...will she actually want another animal?

Worth thinking about depending on DD's personality.... DS got a journal and stationary AND a quill, and NONE have been used. They are souvenirs he wants to keep pristine, not use and become used *up*. (even DS sees that they were a waste of money now...which I tried to tell him at the time, but oh well)

The thing he has used the most was his $100 robe...years of dressing as Ron for Halloween! Now it's nearly up to his knees (I told him that it's perfect for Ron now that it doesn't fit, LOL). Maybe I should see if there's a resale market for those. It has held up beautifully. And he loves Scabbers (he calls him Max, because Scabbers isn't nice but Max would be LOL). (yes he got a lot of souvenirs...we've been quite often and he talks us into something on each trip!)

I think soaking in tea is generally a time-honored thing used to age papers. FWIW.

Eh, not to everyone. It's totally free to stand back and watch other people who bought the wand do things.

And after some frustration with the spell movements, DH discovered that if you just find the little transponder in the window, you can just point the wand straight at it and get the result. Less frustration, less time spent, so the next person in line (who just saw the effect) can do it.
