The answer to your question would fill a book. Disney will send you that book, for free. Just go to www.disneyvacationclub.com and request the information package; they're real low-pressure and won't pester you.

Note: The info that Disney sends won't discuss renting your points, or renting points from a member, since they don't get involved in private transactions between individuals. But, you can find all the info on renting that you need in the FAQs/stickies on the Rent/Trade board.
