I am driving down in mid August and I have been reading the horror stories about traffic problems around Atlanta on I-75 and I already hate driving through Atlanta anyway!!!! I always try to go through on Saturday or Sunday morning very early to avoid the traffic but it sounds like that is when the construction crews will be working.
So - I need some advice about an alternate route. We live near London, Ontario and have always crossed at Windsor and headed straight down I-75. I have been on Mapquest and a couple other driving direction sites but they aren't very helpful, they only give me the I-75 route. I tried directions from Cleveland and it gave me the I-77 route. I know nothing about that route. I will be driving it alone (single mom taking DD11 and DN15) so I am a bit nervous about driving an unknown route.
I am seriously considering buying a GPS but don't really have lots of extra $ right now due to this upcoming trip. I will not fly down either because I have a hurricane issue and like to be able to get out in my own vehicle if necessary (long story).
Any help anyone can offer would be appreciated. I know lots of you drive down from Toronto and use a different route. I would consider crossing the border at Buffalo if I need to. I just need some direction here! Thanks

We always drive straight through Atlanta. NEVER HAD ANY TRAFFIC PROBLEMS. tried alternate long time ago and got lost. Nothing to worry about.

The key to driving through any large metropolitan area is to avoid the rush hours. Avoid them between 6:00-10:00 AM & 3:00-7:00 PM.
As for construction on I-75 consult with Georgia DOT.

I highly recommend CAA triptik's and real maps.
CAA will have up to date construction information.

Google and Mapquest are great from reference and planning but nothing beats a good map and knowing your route.

Depending where you start, going through Buffalo may be a longer route. Only really big city you go through is Charlotte.
I-90, I-79, I-77, I-26, I-95, I-4

My family and I take Interstate 75 every year and we also drive striaght threw Atlanta. Plus since we always get there around 10:00 AM we have had no problems, so if your there early enough you will be ok.

We seem to hit Atlanta around 9 or 10 AM on the Saturday morning and even with construction which we have never seen a crew out on a weekend. You could always take the bypass if you don't want to drive through Atlanta. We like the drive through Atlanta as it is direct and very very easy.

We have a fuly detailed trip plan for our drive down each trip and can pass that along to you if you wish.

Thank you for your responses but from what I read on another thread the construction in Atlanta right now is really bad and it's right on I-75. I do plan to drive through early Saturday morning both ways so I guess I'll just chance it and see what happens. I will stop in at my CAA office and ask them, they are usually up on these things.

Take a look at this web site. Doesn't look like too much construction. If you're really worried take I-285. Activate the cameras on the map and you can have a look for yourself.

Don't forget CAA could always make you a trip ticket which list all areas of construction on I-75 in each state.

Get yourself a copy of Dave Hunter's Along I-75. He spends a great deal of time helping you get through Atlanta. There is a reserved lane that goes right through Atlanta that you could use and the book details where to get in that lane and where you get out of it. We always drive straight through Atlanta.

He also recommends driving threw Atlanta and not using the bypass there unless you want to, so I think we can trust what he says. Also here is a link to his website which has great information. http://www.i75online.com/
