Help with desktop computer purchase

Good Find, if they do not need an extra copy of windows 7 and shipping is free it would be the better deal.

when I ordered mine from them last year, not this model, shipping was $26 and it arrived within 3 days. I think the savings on taxes would negate the cost of shipping, unless of course the OP was in the same state as Newegg.

You've also got time before Christmas, keep an eye on woot.com They have thrown some great computers on there also.

I am pretty computer savvy and in our home we have 4 computers.

I personally would not buy a Dell for any reason.

I would order this from Walmart for $447.97

you will be getting a great computer with an additional copy of windows 7 you can fight over or sell ;)

Pick this computer from the list....

Compaq Presario CQ5210F Desktop PC with AMD Athlon II X2 215 Dual-Core Processor & Windows 7 Home Premium

I have owned many computers over the years and the compaqs have always been very reliable computers 3 out of the 4 computers we own right now are compaqs with a 1997 Compaq Desktop still going strong!

Happy to answer any questions you have.

We have Dell at work and they are fine. I have a GW laptop and its fine.. I have a GW PC and its fine too..

That said...

instead of the walmart special... same one with a monitor, cheaper than above..

Although for $447, plus tax... I'd rather (and did) get this one for $409 ($470 shipped to my house including tax)

This goes back to the comment I made, if the price is the same for 2 models where X has better specs than Y, then X gets my vote even if X is overkill on what I need.

At 70 years old, they might get completly frustrated with an upgrade. My suggestion would to find some one that's a computer geek to help you out. Find a decent used computer, with an older version of Windows probably 98 will do. My old computer from 2000 would probably be good enough to suffice for what they need.
I'm some what nerdy when it comes to computers and I still hate using vista or windows 7, I've still had to get used to some of the differences in XP. XP would be the highest version of windows I'd recommend for them, less likely to have any issue and less crashes.

If they already have cable tv, definatly look into getting them higher internet. That's going to make the biggest difference, and will help them more than just a new computer. Since they like AOL and that program, you can still use it for a small fee, or just aol email for free.

For the basic email computer, I wouldn't look at spending more than a few hundred dollars. And like the previous user said, even with a larger monitor, it's a higher resolution, which means it's smaller text. So you wouldn't need anything larger than a 19inch.

That's just my 2 cents, cause it sounds like you're gonna end up with a new computer sitting in your home come next year when they don't like it.
