Help with DD9 & allergic reaction

Sunday, I noticed DD9 had tiny red spots all over her neck & upper chest/back. There was an area on her face from the corner of her mouth to her chin that was all bumpy also. Otherwise, she was fine - no fever, already had light runny nose/sneezing/cough from seasonal allergies - I think. It got progressively worse during the day & went down to her lower tummy & lower on her back by Sunday night. I gave her Benadryl twice that day.

Only new item was a laundry detergent we started a week ago. Bed was changed for Sunday night w/sheets that were washed in old detergent. She did have strawberries for lunch Sat & Sun, first time this season. She mentioned they made her tongue feel "weird" Sunday. At the time, I just thought it was like when you eat too much pineapple but maybe not.

By Monday AM, she had areas up the side of her face & a large area on her forehead - small skin/light red bumps, not as obvious on her face unless you look in the right light. I took her to the dr Monday AM, she said it was an allergic reaction & gave us a prescription antihistamine for the itching.

She went back to school today but seems to be getting worse instead of better. Bumps all over her face, more on her stomach, now some on the insides of her elbows, back looks the same. She sounds slightly hoarse & her cheeks look a tiny bit puffy.

So after all that, can someone tell me is this a normal allergic reaction? Anyone have a similar experience so we know what to expect? The dr didn't seem too worried, just figured sometimes you never know what causes it. I'll feel better if there are others that have gone through the same & how long til she starts getting better. She's embarrassed to go to school and I feel bad that she's itchy.

My DD had a ver similar reaction to sunscreen this summer. Tiny red bumps everywhere and i do mean everywhere. They spread to cover almost her whole body over the course of about 3 days and started fading after about a week. it took another couple of days to completely go away. It freaked me out too, but doc said nothing to worry about unless DD had trouble breathing.

My dd used to break out a little bit with tomato products but not to the extent you're describing. If it continues to get worse, I would call the doctor again. It sounds like something she still in in contact with though because most allergic reactions won't continue to look worse over a period of days especially with antihistimines.

My ds is allergic to latex, milk and egg. The milk and egg cause a little upset stomach and sometimes vomitting but the latex causes hives and throat swelling (we carry Benadryl and EpiPen everyone).

I personally would take DD to the allergist as soon as possible. Allergies should not be left undiagnosed. Every reaction you have gets worse. For all you know, the next reaction could be life threatening (unlikely but possible given that she said her tongue felt funny). I don't mean to freak you out but allergies can be very serious. It may or may not have been the strawberries but the allergist can test to find out for sure.

The fact she mentioned they made her tongue feel funny is a warning sign to a food allergy there. Did you mention the tongue thing to the pedi? I would definitely address that and see about allergy testing. As others said, allergies can intensify with each exposure. Next time could be worse.

I hope she feels better real soon and you can both rest easy! Before you described the bumps spreading to her face, the first thing I thought was strep throat. My son had a red bumpy rash all over his trunk and I took him to the doctor and they told me that the rash was one of the symptoms. I had never heard that! He had no fever and no sore throat! Strange!

Hopefully for you all, this will be something just as easy to diagnose! Best of health to you...

I agree with the other posters who said take her to an allergist. The comment about her tongue feeling funny is a bit concerning.

My DD9 was eating peas a few months back (something she had eaten several times before) and commented that her throat felt funny. I gave her Benadryl and she was fine, but when I had her tested, we learned that she is severely allergic to peas. She is also allergic to nuts. Before we knew this, I gave her a peanut butter cracker. She put it in her mouth and took it right out again - didn't even bite it - and she ended up with a rash on her arms. It wasn't until a year later when she ate peanut butter that we learned she was severely allergic.

Good luck and I hope your DD is better soon!

DdThen12 didn't think to mention that certain foods made her mouth feel funny--she though that happened to everyone. One morning she woke up with her legs COVERED in little red bumps, which I thought was just a rash, but I still managed to get her into an allergist that morning. Turns out it was HIVES and she was diagnosed with multiple food allergies!

See if you can get an allergist appointment for testing.

I posted earlier about my ds7 allergies. He says his "mouth is burning". This is how we know his throat is swelling. My oldest dd25 gets "bumps" in the roof of her mouth everytime she eats Nerds and other similar candies.

Thanks for the responses! I'm going to find an allergist this afternoon. She doesn't look any worse this AM but no better either. As of last night, she even has bumps on her eyelids & all over her face.

She has had strawberries many times but not since last summer so I guess it sounds like that could be it. She is sensitive to milk & only drinks soy & gets a rash from anti-bac gel so she's got some allergic tendencies anyway.

I tried to call Suave because she uses 3-1 Apple Suave Kids shampoo/soap -which is not new either. They would not give info about scents used as it's proprietary unless a dr calls. She just bathed in it again last night but I may switch her to a baby shampoo/soap until we can figure her out.

Thanks again, I appreciate knowing I'm ok to still be concerned.
