Help with cancelling a flight info

Hi-
I am considering cancelling my December trip as I think I have to drill a new well and money will be pretty tight for a while. I have Geothermal heat, so a low water table will be catastrophic for us this winter.
I already booked airtran, I see it is a $75 fee per ticket to change it plus any amount the new ticket costs over the old.
Does anyone know how long out I have to book a different flight. Can I call a few weeks before my current flight and change it to a flight 4 months from then?

I cancelled Airtran tickets last year.I got a 65.00 credit for a 100 dollar ticket. I had one year from the date the ticket was purchased to use the credit. I cancelled the flight in December but had to use the credit by May. HTH

It is important to not that you only have to spend the credit within one year from the original booking. You don't have to travel by that date.
