....we have ressies for Prez Week (2005) for a standard room (yeah, I know they pretty much overlook the parking lot!) I was thinking of politely asking for an upgrade at check-in, but in case we DON'T get it (good chances on THAT happening!) what would be a location that is near bus, lobby, pool??? Thanks for all responses....:wave2:

I can't answer your question. Sorry.

But had to say Hugh is gorgeous and those are really good pics!

There are so few standard rooms (135, I think) that it really doesn't matter. Keep fingers crossed for an upgrade but if it doesn't happen you'll have fun anyway!

Is there a chance of getting a specific room number? or should we just request a specific type?

...BTW Buttercup, Kate and Leopold is on TBS right now, so ya can get yer 'fix' of Hugh Jackman:teeth: !!

Many standard rooms at the AKL are good rooms with semi views, meaning somewhat blocked of savannah or pool. Its hard to request a room number so wont even give it. Its all a matter of chance. But many are good rooms with fair views.

I booked 2 standard view rooms at AKL back in September. I called the CRO office as I thought of room preferences I wanted to add. (i.e. refrigerator, bunk beds, etc.) Anyway, one of the preferences I listed was "the best view possible." I also sent a fax about 3 days before arrival.

Anyway, we were upgraded to a savannah view. We're going back to AKL in February; it would be nice to get a savnnah view again, but the hotel is GREAT, even without one.

We didn't ask at check-in. They just gave us our room keys and sent us our way!:D

We were on the third floor (lobby level) in Giraffe Trail. We only had to walk a little way down the hall and we were in the lobby by the front doors that lead to the bus stops. They were nice rooms. Very quiet.

I think if I absolutely had to stay in a standard view room again, I would probably request a lower floor, like the bottom floor possible (might be second floor is the lowest possible in this case, not sure about that), that way you'd get foliage in front of your patio/balcony, and you wouldn't be up high enough to see the local billboards that are visible from the higher floors.

When we visited AKL two years ago we were upgraded without even asking. But, if I had a choice about a standard view, I would request that it be near the lobby. Those trails to the rooms go on and on and on and after a long day at the parks your feet will thank you.

That's the way our rooms were. Not far from the lobby and lots of foliage outside our balconies. We really couldn't see any parked cars. If I had to stay standard view I would gladly take these rooms again. Just a note...on the 5th floor there are three or four rooms that do not have balconies so if that is important to you make sure you don't get those. We had them at first but asked to be moved.

....confused:confused: ....the third floor is the LOBBY FLOOR???!?!? We've eaten at Boma twice; I remember walking straight into the lobby from outside...woulda thought THAT was the first floor!!!?!?!?

LAYOUT: The lobby is on the 3rd floor but it is "street level" for the buses and parking lot. Victoria Falls bar is on the 2nd floor and Boma,Jiko, Mara & the pool are on the 1st level.

All standard rooms on the 5th floor Giraffe Trail have balconies BUT they may have solid walls so if you sit down out there you will not be able to see anything. Also, I could not see any billboards from our 5th floor room.

I think the only standard rooms I really would not want are the ones off the lobby by the gift shop going out to the bus stop - you would have extra traffic in that hallway and you would have other guests passing by your room from early am to late at night.
