Help with a neighbor issue please.

This entire post is a very simple concept of code enforcement.

The OP reports that code in her town requires the neighbor to have a fence if they want to grow pot.
If that is true, and the neighbor has no fence, they are in violation of the code.

It is not legal, pure and simple!
The neighbor's sub-standard condition needs to be corrected at their expense.

It would be no different than someone building a gas station in their backyard without a permit,
Or open a hog farm in the bag yard when the area is not zoned.

How many of you want to let the neighbor build a hog farm?
Well technically the law states that the plants must be inaccessble to anyone under 21 years old. I guess the unspoken rule is that a fence would be required to do that...but the law doesn't insist on a fence. I guess you could have it out in the backyard (out of street view) and have it in a locked, small greenhouse too.

The problem with the neighbors is that they have no sun in their backyard. My yard is the same way--I can't grow anything out there.

Most weeds will survive a fire or nuclear winter.

In fact, if you ever burn in your back yard, weeds are the first thing to grow back.

I would bet these will be no different.
I know it’s weed, but my son (who worked at garden centers for 8 years in HS and college) has been working trying to grow it with his friend and friend’s father (retired deputy sheriff). They’ve had some failures with the whole male/female thing. He’s going to get them indoors soon at his new place, has a big bathroom they won’t be needing. It doesn’t appear to be that easy, has yet to be successful, maybe eventually. Maybe tbey should stick to making beer or wine.

Ahhhh... Tippy... I am another one who is thankful to live in a rural area and not to have neighbors.

I also suggest MYOB... unless if course you never ever do anything yourself against community ordinances, noise laws, HOA displays etc. It really sucks to get into a tit for tat situation with an annoyed neighbor. You report for one thing, they start looking for stuff you are doing, soon you discover your driveway or fence is on their property line and now they hate you and no longer feel compelled to play nice...
Boy, I'm glad I live in the middle of nowhere and my neighbors are miles away.

How hard is it to grow weed in Canada
Not sure, I don't live there. But I imagine that unless you're up in the Yukon, you'd encounter the same challenges with growing outside that you would in the Northern part of the US. There are many websites out there that specify how to grow in cooler climates.

The post I quoted made it seem like what worries you is the possibility that someone at your work might think it is your weed. The only way that could happen is if they smell it on you. Unless your work is doing house inspections of employees??
We have several police officers who live in the neighborhood. They like to talk to the prosecutors.

That is their problem not yours
They can buy a chain saw

Not that hard if you're part of the criminal element. They're called Grow Ops and they're the botanical equivalent to meth labs. Somebody buys a house, obscures the windows, sets up a sophisticated hydroponic system in the basement using artificial grow-lighting and typically siphons electricity off a nearby source (or several) in order to not have the astronomical power usage draw attention. I'm not sure if legalization and government regulated retail has changed this any, but this is big business and exists in every city and town nationwide. They are usually short-term because it causes massive moisture/mold damage to the structure and many get condemned as a health hazard and have to be knocked down afterwards.

I actually think I saw that episode on Mike Holmes’ show

How in the world are these plants going to survive during the winter anyway? Doesn’t the temperature get below 60 degrees?
you harvest t hem before that- I just harvested the last of my plants from my backyard and am in the process of drying them and then curing them- right now my entire basement smells like weed because that is where I have the dark room to dry them- all good though because I love the smell! Luckily my neighbors dont care where I grow it because it is lining their fence- they do actually water it for me though even though they don't smoke it.

I was going to say for about a decade DEA held raids on Nantucket once a year. Seems like someone planted some in the wood once and to just kept coming back

Since this question went over like a lead balloon on Reddit I thought I'd ask here.

Virginia now allows for maryjane to be grown at home. However, the statute says it must not be visible from the street and must be behind a fence so that children can't access it.

My neighbors now have a few plants. Whatever, their business. My husband and I cannot partake because of our jobs. Their plants are in pots in their yard next to ours. No fence and totally visible from the street. They can't move them to the backyard because it isn't sunny enough.

Now why does this bother me? I'd actually like to sell or rent out this house in the next year or two and I just don't think families with young children would move in. Therefore, this is a threat to my property value.

How do I approach the neighbor about putting up a fence? I hate confrontation. Also, do I have to disclose that the neighbors are growers to the next family?

Why is it wrong to want people to follow the law?
There's nothing wrong with wanting people to follow the law, but your detailed concern seems a bit unnecessary IMO. If your objective is really just that you want the neighbors to follow the law, then you should either speak to them about it directly or report it to the code enforcer. If it's truly just a concern of compliance, then the other details of your original post are not relevant.

Worrying about how this might possibly affect you potentially selling your house a year or two from now is, I think, why you're getting so much pushback. In two years, they may have moved out, stopped growing the plants, changed the law, etc. And, even if things were exactly the same when you go to list your house, I really don't think this is going to have a huge impact on your resale. The majority of buyers are not going to even notice or care that a neighbor is growing a few legal plants in pots in their own yard.

The fact that you think you need to disclose to potential buyers that your neighbors are "growers" honestly seems bizarre to me. Either you are way overthinking this or you are more judgmental about your neighbor's marijuana use than you claim to be in your posts. Do people normally disclose random information about their neighbors in their real estate listings? To be clear, we are talking about a maximum of four plants (that are completely legal) and, even if neighbors are violating the code, it's a civil penalty of no more than $25 (for not taking precautions to prevent unauthorized access by persons younger than 21 years of age). That seems less significant than an unlicensed dog or an HOA violation, which are other common offenses no one would even consider "disclosing" about their neighbors when selling their home.

Then it seems like these plants will be harvested soon in Virginia.
