Hi!

Tomorrow we're going to see my dd who is a freshman @ Syracuse U for family weekend and would like some ideas where to shop for warm clothing for her ;) !. Besides the Carousel Center - are there any other stores/outlets in the relatively nearby area (as we will have a car and are willing to travel somewhat) where we should go to shop that have warm 'cool' stylish name brand clothing (e.g. north face, etc.) for good prices and selection? We also have to get bulk water/drinks food - is it worth it distance/time wise to go to bjs (I don't think there is a costco nearby according to the website) or should we just go to local chain store?

Finally, one last thing - dd as well as our whole family are foodies and she would love a GREAT steak and Excellent sushi for a family meal - Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (Quality of Meal above cost is more of a consideration) and do we need ressies? She has mentioned Pastabilities as a back up go to place, but she said it will be crazy there this weekend! BTW, we really only have been to Dinosaur BBQ so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance :)!

Carousel would be best only because more option in one area. Sports Authority is located in the mall and there are locations out of the mall too. J Michaels Shoes up on the Hill sells North Face. Only other stores you are going to find outside the malls are Target, Kohls. Probably closest of those is in Fayetteville in the Town Center Plaza near Erie Blvd.

Bulk Food - There is a BJ's in East Syracuse off Erie Blvd. Honestly though most stores have some great prices on water and such. We buy from Wegmans mostly. Sam's Club is also there located on Erie Blvd.

Restaurants - Everything is going to be packed so yes you'll need reservations, unless you are going the chain route but it doesn't sound like that is the case

Downtown - Lemon Grass, Pastabilities, BC

Erie Blvd - Kyoto's, Delmonico's

Fayetteville - Bone Fish, Carrabba's, Scotch and Sirlon (*this is my favorite for steak)

Liverpool - Sanatangelo's

I'll try to think of some more...

We love Empire Brewery Brunch.. Dinners great too but I'm not sure if they have steak. We get smaller meals there.

I am from the general area. I agree on Pastabilities as far as the food being excellent.

For shopping I am not a gigantic fan of Carousel, we go there from time to time but it never really is that exciting to us. It tends to be crowded and depending on what you are looking for you might be able to find it elsewhere in the area. We love the Dewitt area and the Shoppingtown Mall. There are a lot of stores and restaurants on the Erie Blvd strip outside of the mall as well (including some of the ones the previous poster mentioned).

I was in the LL Bean store last week while i was back east. There were a lot of winter type clothes there. It is located in the same shopping complex as the target / kohls in Fayetteville.

My son is a freshman at SUNY-ESF, right next door to SU!:thumbsup2

Great Northern Mall is on Rte. 481 and Rte. 31, about 20-25 minutes away as another mall option. Lots of chain restaurants nearby too. Smokey Bones, Red Lobster, Outback and others. There is also a Kohl's nearby as well as Target, TJ Maxx and Wegman's grocery store.

I lived in Syracuse for 3 years for grad school and would also recommend Santangelo's (really good!). Pastabilities is OK and right downtown. I didn't really eat steak when I was there but heard Scotch and Sirloin is good - we also went to a fancy inn on a lake with good steak but the name escapes me at the moment.

I also like the Reef in Liverpool, too. You must go to brunch at Stella's right by Carousel Center - greasy diner and very popular.

There is a Lord and Taylor at Carousel that's ok. I would do any big house type shopping at the Target in Fayetteville (the nicest one) - it has a starbucks and panera right near by for snacks. On Erie Blvd itself (across from the BN shopping center) there is a ski store with name brand jackets, etc. Bed Bath is in that shopping center, too - and so is Old Navy. J Michaels is really your best bet on the SU hill for north face type stuff, otherwise (and nice jeans, uggs, etc). I also absolutely recommend Wegman's for doing your grocery shopping - I didn't go to BJs once when I lived there - and it's right in between Fayetteville and Erie Blvd.

Gannon's for ice cream is great-home made!

You can also go to the outlets for some shopping but it's a 45 minute or so drive into wine country.

If you venture out towards Skaneateles (pretty drive, nice place to go for a little small-town shopping and lunch or dinner) there is a store right on the main street that sells clothing, including North Face stuff. I didn't check their offerings, but I noticed some items when I was doing some window shopping last weekend.

If you head to Fayetteville, there is also an Eastern Mountain Sports in Town Center. They tend to have nice cold-weather gear if LL Bean doesn't have anything good.
