Is there a chart for points needed for the other resorts. We are doing a major family trip and some of my family really likes the Polynesian and some other places so we are considering getting their rooms elsewhere (although I'd prefer we all stay at same locale but I can only "push" so much ya know!!) We're staying at the VWL. Do the points vary be each resort or by type (deluxe, moderate etc)

Any help appreciated.

On the Member website you'll find the point charts for the Disney collection (in the Member Guidebook)

Sit down and take a deep breath before you check out the points for the Poly:eek:

Karen,
Without butting into your family business, I would suggest strongly convincing the family members who would like to stay at the Poly to stay at VWL with you. UNLESS of course they are paying you for the points you will be using to stay at the Poly. A Sun-Thurs night in the value season of 2003 is 33 points for garden view  , 42 points for Lagoon view  , and 50 points for concierge    ! The Fri-Sat points for value season are 60 points, 76 points and 90 points. These are points just for the value season.

Personally, that is way too many points for me to use on family members. If I had family memebers who really wanted to stay there, then I would have to charge them for the points. If you take the going rate of what points are renting for, $10/point...you are looking at $900 a night to stay in a concierge room on a Friday or Saturday, and that is in Value season! It is 99 points during regular season, so that would be equal to $990 in rented points. OUCH. I am thinking of staying at AKL, but not with my points, I will USE my points by renting them, and then taking the money I got from the points and paying cash for the AK room. I don't think AKL is renting for $310 a night. That is what I can get by renting the 31 points/night they want for AKL Sun- Thurs.

I do hope you can convince them. The points-cash value is too high.

Wow..thanks for the info!!! Yea...I'll be letting them know it's not an option to use our points unless they stay at VWL. I don't think it will be a problem it's just my parents ALWAYS stayed at Poly years ago when there were few choices. I remember when the CBR was new and we convinced them to stay there with us..they liked it but I think they just yearned for their old Poly memories...we'll just take the monorail and watch the Water Pageant on the beach or dinner or something!!

Thanks again!!!:D

I think that is a good plan. When we first bought DVC, we thought we would be using the Disney collection occationally when it was just the two of us. WRONG! We can't seem to give up the luxury of the full villa! We usually take a "resort tour" and go do some of the things you suggest like watching the water pagaent, fireworks from the beach at Poly, or visiting the other resort decorations at Christmas.

Is anyone actually paying $10 per point to rent? The cost per room comes out higher than you can get with an AP discount and they don't get daily maid service.

Sure, John, and more.

The issue here is that using DVC points directly for the Disney Collection is a poor use of the points, given the unfavorable exchange that Disney has with DVC.

The rental board is a free market. So, you rent around 10 points for $10 a piece and you can get a studio for a nite at OKW.

As Disney1fan points out, it would run you 31 points for a room at AKL if you hand them over to Disney.

I understand about the Disney Collection but I'm still confused about renting points.

It takes 24 points for a one bedroom pref. view on a Tuesday in November. Rent the points=$240. I can get the same room with an AP discount for $238 and that includes daily maid service.

Why would anyone rent points? I guess it would better if you couldn't get an AP discount. Hey, I'm not arguing the point. If it's true it's good news for me. I could rent out all of my points and pay cash for the room and I'll be making money on my membership. But...my mother always said that if it was so easy everyone would be doing it.

Very good points (NPI)

You will find a handfull of people who have elected to make their DVC purchase an investment, and they try and make a business out of renting points.

And I'm sure that they are all paying sales tax to the State of Florida on that rental income, as required by law.;)

That is not why 99% of us bought into DVC.

John, that's a specific example and valid only if you are going when that discount applies. Everyone is not an AP passholder. Besides, you'll still have to pay taxes and I think it's up to 13% now, making your room almost $30 a day for maid service. So your best case scenario is a break even only if you'd pay for maid service. The real problem with rentals is that there are risks, uncertainties and usually non cancellation issues.
