  • The Hunger Games

It is always so challenging picking a book for our club because there are so many different tastes. These are great suggestions, but I don't see any commonalities. Personally, I had three that I was interested in. Would anyone else like to read them?

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

This book is actually being made into a movie and should be out this year. I realize that it technically falls in the adolescent lit category (like Twilight, Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter, all books adults enjoy), but know that it is currently becoming a big favorite amongst grown up readers. I'm eager to see what all of the hype is about. Click here for the official book trailer.

A Discover of Witches by Deborah Harkness

This was recommended to me by a friend and is gaining quite a bit of popularity. Amazon chose it as its #1 book for the month of February. Apparently it is the first in a trilogy and has an interesting storyline:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling

I only think it's fit that we read HP 1 at one point before DISapalooza. Is that time now or should we wait until right before the event?
hope no one minds my opinions since i dont participate. i am currently on the second book of The Hunger Games trilogy.......enjoyed the first one very much. they are actuallly planning 4 movies based on the three books. Katniss Everdeen is a tremendous heroine.......you would not be disappointed in this choice........

I agree it is difficult to pick books when there are so many different reading / writting styles. I was thinking of something that I had not already read since that is normally how a book club would work. I've read so many of the books that have been suggested and could do a discussion still.

I do want to read the Discovery of Witches, too. I've heard it was pretty good. Here are a few other books that I have on my "would like to read" list:

The Grave Yard Book
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
The Possibilility of Everything
Waiting for Columbus
The Bean Trees
Mudbound
The Color of Water
The Story of Your Life
The Tower, the Zoo and the Tortoise

Ohhhh, The Graveyard Book. I read it last summer and am still thinking about it. It was very unusual of a story, but so good. I really liked it.

I'd be interested in The Hunger Games...need to finish up Freedom first...regardless of which is the final choice, what date do you anticipate getting started?

I was hoping to get started this week with a book I was planning on using, but it was suggested I get input from everyone. If we can just narrow it down to a book that people are satisfied with we'll be good to go. It's very difficult finding something that appeals to everyone.

Tomorrow night I will add a poll to this thread so we can vote on some of the choices mentioned here. If anyone has other titles, please let me know so I can include them. :)

I am glad to hear this. I've been excited about reading it for awhile now. :thumbsup2

I would love to join the DIS Book Club now that I've got a little more free time to read. I've been reading a lot of NF and could use a break.

I'm currently in the middle of Makers by Cory Doctorow. Have people read his book Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom? It's a great read and beause Doctorow publishes under Creative Commons format, you can get it free for the Kindle.

Welcome to *****un society, where all today's commonplace problems have been solved: even death is a minor inconvenience, since one can make regular backups. Our hero has gone to Disney World--his habit at times of major personal crisis--where he works for the ad-hocracy that runs the Haunted Mansion and the Hall of Presidents. It is a great honor to be working on the pinnacle of late-twentieth-century cultural and artistic achievement--Disney World, that would be--and it inspires great loyalty. Our man begins feeling the pressure of change, however, after a cookie-cutter teenybopper shoots him dead for apparently no reason at all. Convinced that a new ad-hocracy on the block used his death to take over the Hall of Presidents, he vows to sabotage their plans and protect the sanctity of the Haunted Mansion. Thus begins a cycle of destruction and conflict with unexpected ramifications for the park--and his personal life. An excellent ride, entertaining and unpredictable.

I've read The Hunger Games series and would love to read it again too though. Be warned though, the series itself is highly addictive and you'll want to read them all!

I just finished The Memory Keeper's Daughter. Wow! I couldn't put it down. I would definitely read it again in a bookclub type format (my copy even has questions for discussion at the end!). I'd love to discuss this book with others.

The Hunger Games is also on my list, but I haven't read it yet.

That's a lot of great suggestions! I'm kind of anxious to read The Hunger Games - I've had it on my Kindle and waiting, but haven't had a chance to read it yet.

The Harry Potter books are supposed to come out on electronic format in October - maybe that would be a good time to read/re-read at least the first one in preparation for DISapalooza? :yay:

Hunger Games would be good! It is on my list since they are making the movie and there is all of this hype about it.

I've been away from the boards for awhile and would love to get back on board the book club.

The Hunger Games is a great read. I wouldn't mind re-reading that one. I do agree it is addictive and before you know it you have inhaled the entire series.
Discovery of Witches is on my wish list too, so either one of those would be great!

It sounds like The Hunger Games is becoming the popular pick. If everyone is on board, I wouldn't mind forgoing a vote and just using that. :) We can start this week if that's the case.

Hope it's in Nook stores as well! I traded my kindle for a Nook Color and i adore it!!! Lets us know!!!

If it's not too late I want to vote for A Discover of Witches. My sisters book club read Hunger Games and while it was a good book she said there wasn't much to talk about.

Maybe we should narrow it down to the two? It seems like there's a strong favor towards Hunger Games, but also Discovery of Witches. What's everyone think? We could always do one this month and the other next. :)

The only thing that makes me not want to read The Hunger Games is the fact it is the first of a series. Even if it turns out to be just an okay book, you almost feel like you have to read the rest of the series. ;)

I'm open to either. Wonder which one would be better to discuss?

The only requirement is that you...well, read the book! :) We'd love to have you!

I am adding a poll to this thread. Vote on which of the two popular books mentioned should be read! :)

Wow, as of right now they are tied!

I just checked the status of the witches book at the library. Right now, there are 101 holds on it! :scared1: At that rate, it won't be available until next year!

Unless everyone reads it in 3-4 days, then count on two years!!! :lmao: Wow, I can't believe I hadn't heard about this book before now...you really can find out about anything and everything on the Dis.
