I think both places are great!
The last time I was at 'Ohana, everything was perfect- I had the most memorable server I've had in WDW, the world's best pina coladas, perfect Castle view, amazing shrimp wontons and green beans and my meat skewers were juicy and tender, especially the shrimp! Barely had room for the pineapple caramel dip dessert!
Now, there are changes to the menu and I'm hoping all of them don't go through until after my next trip (December) but regardless I will go again and experience the changes for myself.
The last time I went to Spoodles, I also had a great meal! I was with my nephews and the kids meals were so creative and beautiful, especially the dessert- this little Artist's palette- make your own sundae thing- just perfect! I did not enjoy the calamari, but I had some type of grilled chicken entree and it was tender and juicy and amazing.
Again, there are changes recently to Spoodles, too, mostly cutting back on the menu items so there aren't as many choices, but I think they've kept the most popular ones.
I really enjoyed them both for different reasons. They're both a good value, not too expensive and have great food.
I would probably look at the menus online (AllEarsNet.com) and see which appeals to you more-
Would you want family style (Ohana) or a la carte ordering (Spoodles) ?
Polynesian/Asian/Brasilian style food (Ohana) or Mediterranean Italian/Spanish/Greek style food (Spoodles)?
Atmosphere of coconut races, hula hoop contests and Hawaiian music, with the potential for a table by Cinderella's Castle?
Atmosphere of a beautiful open kitchen and rustic decor with a Hidden Mickey?
Whichever you choose, I want to encourage you to spend some extra time there- either at the Polynesian or the Boardwalk because they are truly two of the most beautiful resorts, worth exploring.
The Poly's pool is gorgeous, the Great Ceremonial House is just spilling over with native flora and a waterfall, there is a torch lighting ceremony at 6 everyday- you could time you reservations so you would have time to see the ceremony first. The shops are filled with a combination of traditional Disney and traditional Polynesian as well as every UNtraditional mix. Love it!
The Boardwalk is made for visitors! There are tons of shops, including Seashore Sweets and the Boardwalk Bakery, so if you skip dessert, you can pick something up there for later. It's right on the water so you can do a pre or post dinner walk around the lake- gorgeous! I've done it, and passing by the other resorts is just so relaxing and fun! If you're without kids you can go over to Jellyrolls the piano bar or Atlantic Dance, the swing club/dance hall. If you're with kids get to your reservation earlier and you can enjoy face painters, several cute carnival style stands, a fortune teller, etc. They do close up at dark, so time accordingly.
So what would I choose? Well, if you've never been to one of the two places (Poly or Boardwalk) go see the one you haven't seen. If you've been to both, go by menu choice, if you haven't been to either, I would suggest trying to squeeze in both, or if not, maybe Spoodles and then a breakfast at Kona one day to get a look at the Poly!
Anyway, enjoy your trip- either place will be wonderful.
