My DS is 2 and seems to have come down with a cold. He has been coughing and has had a runny nose the past 4 days. He really hasn't been sleeping either. And last night he woke up twice screaming I mean he was really crying and was pretty much inconsolable for almost 5 minutes. I tried to ask him what was wrong but he wouldn't say anything just kept crying. Has this ever happened to anyone else? If it has what was wrong with your child? I'm just worried about him doing it in the middle of the night in a hotel room and waking up neighbors.

When my DD started waking up in the middle of the night screaming, she had an ear infection. She is quite a bit younger though. Is there an emergency number you can call from your pedi?

I had him in the pediatricians office yesterday afternoon and everything was fine. I had originally thought that he might of had an ear infection but the doctor said everything looks fine.

When any of my kids woke up in the middle of the night and they had a cold, it was because of an ear infection.

Our peds doctor is awesome, and he or one of his associates can usually see my kids right away. Call your doctor, let them know whats going on and that you are leaving for vacation tonight.

Are you flying? Flying with ear infections can be BAD, make sure you tell your doctor and see if they will prescribe you ear drops. They numb the ear, so there is no pain.

Are you staying in a Disney resort on vacation? They have AWESOME doctors on call - I had to use them last June, and they were just great. They came very quickly, and had all the meds with them. I was impressed!

Hope your little guy feels better soon!

I know how you feel. This just happened to us. We spent NYE in the ER instead of Epcot.

Good luck. It will work out. Ya know the drill...take motrin and tylenol (nighttime so your child can rest) with you. Lots of fluids.

Id go back to the doctor today.

My kids and I started throwing up the day we left. Then our youngest got an ear infection a week into our trip. It was pretty bad.

My son is Joey too! Has he had a bowel movement?

Maybe its nightterrors? Since he was so upset and hasnt complained of any symptoms.

Let us know how it goes.

DS has been sick and did the same exact thing as your DS!! He has had the runny nose and cold symptoms. He had a fever for a day then it went away. I took him to the Dr. and he had a virus, forgot the name, sorry. He also had pink eye, which I suspected. He was fine though, no ear infection, no strep. He also wasn't sleeping and he woke up screaming and crying. I couldn't get him to stop or tell me what was going on. I finally figured it out with alittle help from him once he calmed down. He was stuffed up and couldn't breath. I guess feeling like that scared the you know what out of him. Luckily I had one of those plug in vaporizors with the medicine in it that helps you breath at night when you have a cold. It's like a little night light and you insert this strip that when it warms gives off the medicine. You can buy it in any drug or grocery store. I would toss one in your suitcase. It help my DS and then I proped him up with some pillows so he wasn't sleeping flat. It has helped. He still has the sneezing and runny nose, so does DD. It just seems to be going around. Sorry your DS is sick before your trip. Remember to give him some medicine before you get on the plane. If he is congested it will really bother him on the plane.
Good luck!

Are you familiar with the urgicare(or whatever it is called) in Orlando? They will even pick you up from your hotel in a van with a car seat if you need a ride there. The drivers are usually retired men who have moved to FL and are safe drivers. The van service is run by the hospital. they will even take you to a pharmacy/grocery store. We chose this over having the doctor come into the room because the house call was not covered by insurance.
We used this service twice, the first time both girls had ear infections. The second time younger DD had strep throat and they even picked us up at MK.
The doctors at the clinic were very good and interacted well with children.
Good luck!

My DS who is almost 2 has had the same problem. He is just unable to breathe and wakes up crying. I have been giving him the Robitussin Pediatric Cough and Cold CF formula and it works great for 4-5 hours. It is safe for 2 year olds to take as well. It is kind of hard to find. Just make sure you get the pediatric one. I wouldn't worry about him waking others up. That's the chance you take when you are in a hotel. Just do the best you can with him and hope for the best. Have fun!

I would take the child to the Drs NOW..why wait?? its not worth the risk if the child needs meds etc.... and its easier doing it while you are home....peace of mind as well...

Id defintely take him back to the docs...i would also make sure to give a dose of Benedryl before flying to make sure everything is clear.. Good Luck and i hope your little man is feeling better!!!

If you can, I'd go ahead and take him back to the doctor today. There have been numerous times when one of my kids has been sick with what I was sure was an ear infection, take them to the doctor and been told that they were fine, only to have them be miserable for another night. Then, taken them back to the doctor and have an ear infection confirmed.

Good luck!

I would try to fit in one more doctor's visit today to be sure. My daughter has never had an ear infection so that may not be it. If it is that is painful (I had my first one last month on a trip to Vegas, I thought my ear was going to explode!)

If it's not an infection and simply a cold I would give him AIRBORNE (It's like an alka seltzer tablet-they have kids version as well or you can give him half of an adult tablet) Every time my daughter starts to get sick I give her that and most of the time she gets better so fast! You can take it every four hours (start soon!) it is like a major boost to your immune system. I have used it many times as well and I haven't gotten any bad colds this winter.

If he is sick when you get there it is pretty easy to get him to the doctor. We stayed at ASM last August and my daughter got sick (the morning after she swam in the hotel kiddie pool-6 inches of stagnant water-yuck!! She will never swim in there again) anyway we called the front desk and they arranged for a van to pick us up (for free) and took us to a clinic and although it took a while they saw her and gave her a shot of anti naseua stuff and a prescription for us to fill. The receptionist called the van to come get us and then the van brought us across the street to Walgreens to get the prescription (we also used this oppourtunity to stock up on Ginger Ale, water and crackers for her. And they brought us to the hotel again. I was pleasantly surprised since that morning I was having visions of taking a cab with no booster seat :scared1: to the hospital and waiting for hours, etc. and it was much easier than I could have imagined. So good luck and hope your little guy feels better

Oh yeah i second the Airborne JR., and you can get kids zicam as well...we used these for my girls when we went to WDW in November...they were both coming down with a cold 2 days before we left and we started these and they were fine with 2 days...

The package for Airborne Jr. says the age range is 4-?. So I do not feel comfortable giving a 2 year old Airborne.

As a pediatrician, I always warn parents of young children with colds that although there isn't an ear infection at the time of her visit, if the child gets worse, fussier, she needs to be rechecked. Your child certainly has the right set up for one and they can happen overnight so although the ears were fine at the time of visit, they can be infected now. Call you peds dr ASAP to see if you can get in to be seen. I would go with a Dr you know and trust rather than someone who might be trained in internal medicine(adult) at an urgent care in a foreign city. Otherwise, find a pediatric urgent care/ER if your child feels worse. I work at a pediatric urgent care and we were so busy last night that I would highly suggest a scheduled appt with your Dr than waiting in an ER/UC for over 4hrs+. Good luck! I hope your little one feels better. I hate it when my kids are sick.:sad1:
