Help!! Science fair project ideas???

DD did a project on optical illusions. she included very extensive research, & displays of illusions (huge hit!!). 1st place in the school-wide fair.

Do you remember any of the details of this project? What was she trying to prove? It sounds interesting. Thanks!

I like number 2 and 3. At our last science fair, one child had the kids put something on their hands to see all of the dirt under a black light. Then they used antibacterial soap and looked again. This also had a line. We did ours on memory. Our son put about 25 things on a cookie sheet and covered it. He uncovered it for a few seconds and then the people had to write down as many things as they could remember.

OP, I Googled UV Beads and there were several websites with these available for purchase. They look similar to the pony beads that you find in craft stores. Good luck!

Anyone ever hear of any good Disney related science projects? My dd wants to do one Disney related, perhaps at the parks. I normally have lots of ideas for Disney, but this time, I am stumped.

Also, someone at our school did the sunscreen one, but used hot dogs rubbed in sunscreen instead. She won 1st place at county.

One year (under 100% adult supervision) we compared fabrics to see how fast each would burn. Some of the fabrics were treated with a flame retardant and some weren't. It was a good lesson to show kids how fast fire can destroy things and to see that they really have no time to mess around when they see one. It was also interesting to see how some fabrics almost turned to plastic as they melted (rather than burned).

If my kids have to do another science fair project, we're going to do something with solar energy. We'll probably try to make some kind of homemade solar panel. My kids are both really interested in this right now.

We're going to do Mo's project on how the ghosts appear in the ballroom scene at the Haunted Mansion.

Really simple and doesn't take much time...

What in taco sauce (from taco bell) makes a penny shiney?
you can show the penny non shiney/corroded
and after being dipped in the taco sauce

Investigate what is in taco sauce:tomato, vinegar, salt, corn syrup, spices
Show the results of a penny dipped in each of these substances.
(off shoot compare and contrast taco sauce vs ketchup)

Show results of combination of ingredients to arrive at the answer that it is the vinegar and salt that removed the corrosion for a very shiney penny.

Easy and cheap :thumbsup2

I have no idea if this is still cool or what.

When I was in school when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I did a plant experiment.

Three small plants were bought, making sure they were of the same size and photographed to prove they were about the same.

One plant was the control and sat on the ledge between my living room and dining room, thus exposing it to all sorts of normal noises.

One plant was put in a room next to a radio playing only classical music.

One plant was put next to a radio that played only hard rock/heavy metal music.

The three plants were given equally measured amounts of water and sunlight and were documented as they grew.

The end result was that the plant with exposure to classical music grew much larger and healthier than the other two.

I won an award for originality and for my documentation presentation. It was really hard to not switch plants, because I really wanted the heavy metal plant to shine. It was the most shriveled of the three.

I suppose nowadays you can use Hannah Montana and Opera music.

My godson took first place 3 years in a row with varous plant ones- the effect of cigerette smoke on plant life, the effect of aspirin on plant life and the effect of caffeine on plant life. But since you don't have time for those my friends son took first place last year with a Jello experiment. You take different color Jellos and use food dye to make them all purple, then you have a whole bunch of people taste them and tell you if they can tell what flavor they are- the majority guessed grape for even the lemon one- the point was that color effects what you think you taste.

When ds was in 3rd grade he placed 2nd in the school and 3rd at regional level: He compared air pollution near a highway or busy road to a more rural area. We used two large coffee cans, tied a string around them so they could be hung in a tree. Cut two circles to fit inside the cans, covered each with vaseline, put in bottom of can. Hung one can (they hung sideways so the open end was exposed) close to a highway, hung the other close to our home. We left them for 2 days or so. There was a huge difference between the two.
