Help regarding Heathrow terminals!

DS and I are flying from Italy to the US with a stop in Heathrow and I am curious about making our connection. We (myself and my 7 year old) will be flying on British Airways, but the terminals seem to be far apart and I am worried we won't have enough time to connect. Going is not a big issue as we will have 4 hours in between flights, however, on the way back we land at terminal 4 at 6:35 a.m. (provided we are ontime) and then our next flight departs from terminal 1 one hour and 15 min. later at 7:50 a.m. In a diagram that I was looking at of Heathrow, it appears terminal 4 is separate from the other 3 terminals and I wondered how long it would take to go from terminal 4 to terminal 1 and if transport is by walking or by shuttle.

Haven't been to Heathrow but I did find this information on the Heathrow website:

"This is the route you will take if you are arriving on a flight at Terminal 4 and departing on an international flight from Terminal 1. It will take approximately 65 minutes from landing to get to your departure gate. If you are concerned about making your connection within this time, please speak to your airline at your arrival gate or in the Flight Connections Centre."

It is a LONG way between terminal 4 and terminal 1 - you get a bus from T4 to the other 3 terminals, the stop is in between T1 and T2, and you walk quite a long way.

I have done it in an hour, but my luggage didn't join me on my flight.

I have to say that it sounds odd that you would be flying from Italy into T4 and then out of T1 to the USA, normally flights to the USA depart from Terminal 4, and Terminal 1 tends to be for domestic UK flights.
