Help please! What will I do since I don't have insurance?

Well, we didn't purchase insurance when we booked through AAA. Stupid, I know! Our trip is in 3 days and I think my sons may come down with chicken pox. They were exposed to my niece probably 3 times during her incubation period, and her spots just showed up yesterday. Anyway, do I have any options if they get it? Am I just going to lose all my money? I am panicking so much right now ! Thanks!

You can always change your travel dates and reschedule your trip. I am not exactly sure what the cancellation/change policy is but you should be able to change your dates, although there may be some sort of fee associated with this.

My old boss took her 2 year old with the chicken pox to Disney. Not that I am saying thats ok. I guess ppl do still go on vacation when their kids are sick. And I think the incubation period is like 2 weeks.

Chickenpox is a rash illness caused by a virus. Once a person is exposed to the chickenpox virus, it takes between 2 and 3 weeks before the symptoms appear.

I do believe that you will be able to change your trip but keeping free dining might be a problem. I know that we have had to reschedule before and the closer to your travel date the more likely to charge a fee. Free dining two years ago my dd19 had to cancel a few days before the vacation due to work issues. They only took away the fee for insurance we had purchased there was no charge for cancelling her. They gave us a credit for it.

The problem with the incubation period, they were around my niece all throughout her incubation period, so I don't know when to expect my boys to break out with the spots. It could be now, or 3 weeks from now!

Does anyone out there know the odds that my boys caught it? You think it's a definite? They played closely with all her toys at her house. Thanks!

Call your pediatrician and get them on medication for it. I don't recall the name of it but its used to treat viruses and begins with a "Z". Its commonly used for shingles and herpes outbreaks (chicken pox is in the same family). I did this when my kids got the chicken pox. DD ended up with about 10 spots and DS with 2 and the spots dried up within a day or two. They acted fine the whole time. Not itchy, no fever, etc. The only thing I would avoid would be swimming in the pools.

I am not sure of the statistics but will say both of my boys got the chicken pox after getting the shot. They were 9 and 11 at the time. So approx. 4-5 years after the shot. One had a VERY mild case..would never have guessed it was the chicken pox. Ds11..whew had a case like I had as a child without the vaccine. DS9 was the one exposed to the virus through a child in his class. She sat at his table. So, its a hard call. Ds9 broke out about 6 days before ds11 did. I hope it all goes well for you.

With only three days till your trip and not even sure that they will come down with it..I don't know whether I would cancel.

Especially if they had the vaccination. I would call your Ped for an opinion. They can tell you the incubation period and what to look for..

First, I would call your pediatrician or look up in your records to see if they have been vaccinated. If they have, most likely it will not be an issue. Yes, some vaccinated kids have gotten a mild case, but many do not get anything. If your kids have been vaccinated, I would definitely go on the trip.

If not, then I would ask your pediatrician for advice he see what they say. Chances are, if they had a lot of contact with your neice throughout the time she was contagious, they are going to get the chicken pox. I would probably try to cancel and go at a time when everyone can enjoy themselves. It is no fun having sick kids at disney.

Does the vaccine always prevent chickenpox?
The main purpose of any vaccine is not necessarily to entirely prevent the disease, but rather to prevent the serious or complicated form of the disease. Recent studies have shown VV to be as much as 95 percent effective toward preventing chickenpox and 100 percent effective for preventing severe chickenpox. Even though between one and four percent of vaccinated children can still get chickenpox, these "breakthrough infections" are mild and usually result in only a few days of a low-grade fever and a few spots.

Seriously I would plan to go - they have been vaccinated so you should expect they won't get it - if they do get it it would not be the norm (yes even though some do - -more don't or there wouldn't be a vaccine).

If they do get it then call and see what can be worked out - I have found in these type of situations (even without insurance) Disney will typically work with you to get you there without a loss of money.

I am not trying to be mean or to flame you any way, I completely understand where you are coming from. I too would be totally upset to do all of the planning, dreaming, etc to only have to cancel my trip.

With that being said, some people could become very, very ill if exposed to your children (if they truly have been infected with the Chicken Pox). People with compromised immune systems, prevous attacks of shingles, adults whom have never had Chicken Pox, those from other countries who may not require the immunization, etc. I understand that we are all exposed to things every day at school, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. However, if there is a chance to limit exposure, I would try to do so. Maybe that is what the nurse was trying to say, but it didn't come across very nicely.

Again, I am not judging you in way and I wish you and your children the best.

It took 2 weeks for my DD to get chicken pox from a kid at school. They were there on friday and looked like tiny hives and gone saturday night... very strange. her doctor said that she got a very mild case. there were 4 or 5 left after the others disappeared but they never popped or anything

In England we don't have the vaccine for it but I wanted to add two of my four kids have had it more than once (as has DH and all his siblings) but my other two have been exposed to it just the same as the 2 (and with his cousins) who have had it each time and neither has come down with it so (especially with vaccination) there is a good chance they won't come down with it so if they have no signs (cold like symptoms, spots, white spots inside the mouth) i'd carry on planning and deal with it if or when you have to.

I am also thinking of others too! I don't want to expose anyone! I am waiting for a nurse to call me back so I can talk to her more about it. We did have the vaccination so I want to see how bad my boys are going to be if they do get it. I mainly started this thread just to see what my options were if we decided not to go, since I don't have insurance.
