As an American driver, the only thing on here that I'd say is incorrect advice is the tip that recommends to keep the parking brake on when you put the car in DRIVE. Maybe it's just the way I learned to drive an automatic, but I ALWAYS:
1. put my foot on the brake pedal first
2. take the parking brake OFF
3. shift the car from PARK to DRIVE
By the way, it is VERY RARE for U.S. car rental companies to rent/hire out cars that are NOT automatic transmission. Even the muscle cars (like Mustangs) are automatic.
By the way, Mustangs are often WAY more expensive to rent/hire at any car rental company because it's considered a premium rental. Thus, it's considered an 'upgrade.'
Some Americans are honk-happy (meaning, they like using the horn on the steering wheel). If somebody honks at you, just ignore them because they need to take a chill pill.
The satellite navigation systems that car rental companies offer ARE quite expensive to rent/hire. For what it's worth, I have NEVER had to use a navigation system when travelling to a new city here in the U.S. I usually have pretty good luck when printing out driving directions ahead of time off of
http://maps.google.com or
http://www.mapquest.com. And if you get lost, you can always use the old fashioned method of stopping at a fast food restaurant or a gas (petrol) station to ask for directions.
