Help planning a short trip to NYC

Check out the www.newyorkpass.com. Your kids might enjoy the free Sony wonder technology lab. Advanced reservations are recommended. We went yo the National Museum of Mathematics in Feb and my girls 8 nd 12 loved it. It was lots of hands on math.

I've been following this thread with interest because we'd like to plan a New York trip one day. This post made me laugh out loud. Our family is completely divided when it comes to math. Dh and ds excel at it and love it so they would have a blast with that. DD and I would have to be dragged inside kicking and screaming:rotfl2:
Maybe we'll hit an art museum while they go there ;)

There is no longer a one day pass for Transportation. The Unlimited ride is 7 days and is $30.00 per person. A single ride fare is $2.75 per person per ride.

Children under 44 inches (up to three) ride free with a parent. Not sure of the height of your children.

My daughter and I were there for 3 days. We walked a lot but still filled up about $40.00 on our card. (they charge for the card now also). Depending on if you will be going back and forth and riding the subway to an from places (little legs get tired), you can decide on what you will want to do for your tickets.

With the boys being the ages you posted, I think that you will not spend a lot of time in Central Park.

The Museum of Natural History is a great choice. The Wax Museum would be a good choice. Times Square and the stores are good if they like shopping. There is the Central Park Zoo.

I think walking across the Brooklyn Bridge would be good for their age, but I believe it is 1.5 miles each way (approximately) so you would know if they would be okay.

The free ferry to see the Statue of Liberty would be a good choice.

My son went at that age and to be honest it really wasn't all that much fun for him. He enjoyed the Museum of Natural History and eating a themed restaurants, a tour of Yankee Stadium and that was it for him. The rest he just tolerated. Actually if you ask him, it was eating at cool places that he enjoyed. (and the Broadway show, but you didn't mention that but if you see one they would like it was something my son enjoyed).

Have a nice trip.

We have 2 boys who are now 11 and 13. We've taken them into the city many times for day trips.

If you are interested in getting the NY pass for 1 day, here is an example of how to get the most out of it:
(csi exhibit isn't there anymore...it is harry potter and spy right now...this is the website:
http://www.discoverytsx.com/exhibitions/harry-potter

We did go to the Harry Potter one and it was nice. Keep in mind these exhibits are fairly small for the $$$. If you make it as part of the pass, it isn't so bad.

A link to our day with the pass:

Here is another day with the pass....some things are the same but my older son didn't go with us on this trip

My kids always like going to the intrepid museum, too.

Dylan's candy bar is within walking distance to the Roosevelt Island tram. Over priced candy, but the kids love it and it makes for bright colorful pics!

They always like going to Chinatown to eat, too. cheap!

skip the seaport...nothing much there.

sign up for groupon, living social, goldstar, etc... you never know!

Have fun!!!!

Love the ideas. Now I want to plan a trip to NY. I don't have any suggestions but want to say have a great trip.

Definitely get the Metrocard. We used it on buses and trains. You can also walk to a lot once you get to Manhattan. We still have some money on our cards but we can use when we go back. We tried food from street vendor and a few diners. Avoid dining anywhere near times square where even McDonald's and Fridays are over priced! The Astro restaurant on the Avenue of the Americas near MOMA was fantastic. Central park is cool but huge. We only saw part of it and we were there all day. We took the paid ferry to Ellis and Liberty Island. The wait was 5 hours to go and 2 hours to leave. Since the island is closed definitely do the free ferry which goes right past it.
Battery park is nice and you need to see the 9/11 monument.
My daughter loves the theatre and gets last minute and student discounts. check at box office on show day.

Travelzoo has a special for Met Museum of Art tickets.

I would see about staying in Manhattan. You are going to spend a lot on taxis, I think. See if the cost balances out.

I found excellent deals on our hotel and Broadway tickets through Travel Zoo.

I have a trip planned for the third week in June and just read that the Statue of Liberty was closed due to Sandy. What exactly happened to her? I am so bummed. Any chance they will have a "soft opening" before the 4th of July?

I always tell people to go to the Top of the Rock. It's a fantastic 360 degree view of the city. I like it better than the Empire State Building bc you can see the ESB. You buy tickets ahead of time and they give you a time frame of when to return. Google when sunset is and get tickets for around that time- it is def worth it.

I agree with all the suggestions of the Staten Island Ferry.

Oh and a single metrocard ride is $2.50 not $2.75, to correct a PP.

The prices just went up, a SingleRide is $2.75 now. But if you have a Metrocard with more money on it, a single use will only take $2.50 of it. It used to be $2.25, and a SingleRide was $2.50

I have not read through this whole thread, but I'm sure you'll have a great time in NYC! There are SO many things to do!

Just wanted to say that Corporate Account #0560041604 will take 20% off the Best Available Rate at Hampton Inns (assuming there is availability for that discount). It is Hilton's MVP Rate and the only requirement to use it is that you have a Hilton Honors number. You may have already gotten a great rate or another discount, but if not give that one a shot and save a little money!
