Ok my family and I are thinking about a trip to disneyland. We live in NJ and have been to WDW quite a few times but have not been to disneyland yet. It would be a trip for me 27, my DH 28, and Mom 50's. I would like it if you would write out what you think would be the best plan for my family and I for our first trip to disneyland. We would like info from what airport to fly into to what resort and to get a dining plan or not. When is the best time to visit. we are open to travel any month. how long a trip? Just plan what you think the perfect vaction would be. We are clueless so any info would be great. I love to see the ideas that everyone has. Also we don't want to rent a car so any info on what taxis, buses, etc that would be best would be great.

I guess I would need to know a little more info......................is there a budget and what time of year are you thinking? Are you wanting two rooms or are you going to share? Are you morning people or night owls?

I would say a moderate budget but not so cheap we have a nasty room.
Anytime of year is fine. Whatever is best is great. We would like two rooms.
we a usually morning people.

DLR has only 3 resorts -- the Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier, and the Grand Californian. I always stayed off-site (since many off-site hotels are right across the street!).

As for flights, I am guessing you are in Central/South Jersey? If so, your best way to get there will be on Southwest Airlines out of Philly. Southwest flies into both Los Angeles Int'l (LAX) and the Orange County/John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana (SNA), which is actually closer to DLR.

Hope this helps...

Oh well welcome to the Disneyland fanatic area on the board. You have come to the right place to ask the questions. First off thats so exciting your getting to experience DL now and are going to be able to compare and experience so many new things.

I need to ask a few questions first...
1) Are you going anywhere else besides DL? Do you want to go to Sandiego Zoo, Sea World, Knotts Berry Farm, Universal Studios etc?

2) How long do you plan on staying?

3) Are you on a budget for hotels?

Ok well on with what I can tell you... Bare with me ;) :

Airports & Shuttles:

The closest one to Disneyland is John Wayne (SNA) or there is the Las Angeles (LAX) which is about a half hour or so drive from Disneyland. Some people like to fly into LA which is sometimes cheaper. I myself like to save some time and fly into the John Wayne

As for Shuttles both airports have the Disneyland express bus that will take you to DL or there is taxi, or my favorite "Super Shuttle" the cost from John Wayne is $11 per adult one way from Airport to your hotel, and you can also get Super Shuttle to pick you up at your hotel the day you leave and take you back to the air port for another $11 per adult.

Disneyland Park & Passes:
Disneyland can be seen in about 4-5 days as everything is so compact and close together, even down town Disney. Insted of walking like 5 min to DTD at WDW you can walk out of Disneyland gates and its about 100 feet to your right.

As for passes, there are many places to get them. I dont recommend the Disney stores as they are pricey, the gates are the same thing. I would look into AAA, Costco, or my favorite place www.getawaytoday.com the tickets there are wicked cheap and over a 3 day pass comes with an early entry.

Hotels:

Unlike WDW there are only 3 resort hotels at DL: The Grand Californian, Paradise Pier, and the Disneyland Hotel. If you are willing to spend the cash and stay at a resort, any of those are fabulous. BUT if your are on a budget then walking distance on the strip just outside of Disneyland are a bunch of great hotels with much cheaper rates, and some being even closer then the Disneyland parking lot. The fav strip hotels that are mentioned frequently on Disboards is : Howard Johnson, Carousel Inn and Suites, Camelot, Tropicana, Park Place Inn, Park Vue, Desert Inn and Suites.

Check out this link which gives you the map of the hotels: http://www.geocities.com/ashpsyche/DisneylandLinkMap

Where it says "Entrance Plaza" on the map is the cross walk from the hotels that take you right into Disneyland. Staying on the strip I prefer much better because some of those are even closer then the resort hotels, and when your tired, need a break or want to go back to the hotel and change or swim, its an easy walk of about 5 -10 minutes max.

Shuttles for hotels:

The hotels that are not on the strip, nor are the resort hotels do have transportation to the park. Its called ART (Anaheim Resort Transportation). Its $3 a day per person to take the bus to Disneyland and the busses run about every 20 minutes. I do not care for the ART very much personally because the busses hardly are ever on time and if they are full they bypass you and you have to wait another 20 minutes. The busses stop running for an hour around 1:00 for lunch break, and will stop running an hour after the park closes. When you want to wander DTD after park closing, its hard to catch a shuttle especially if its full. Then you have to walk, take a cab or something back to your hotel. Also when you want to go back to your hotel mid day you have to wait for the bus to come pick you up at the Disneyland bus loop, drop off people along the way and then you have to wait for it to pick you up at your hotel later. Its more hassel then its worth. But thats my opinion. Others love it. So the Harbor strip is recommended as its walking distance.

Getting Around without a car:

If you would like to go to Universal, Sandiego Zoo, Sea World etc. I HIGHLY recommend Gray Line
http://www.coachamerica.com/citypages/index.cfm/location/anaheim

If you buy your tickets through them it comes with bus transportation. The prices may seem slightly higher on the Gray Line bus link then buying tix else where, but thats cause your paying for $10 round trip bus fair as well. Its still cheaper then paying for taxi etc. The bus picks you up from your hotel, drives you to that park, picks you up at the end of the day and will take you right back to your hotel. Its fabulous. With Gray Line they have many different locations to visit so I would check it out.

Dining

There are loads of places to eat at DL. The prices in the park have gone up slightly but here is the link to the updated prices and menus

http://www.allearsnet.com/dlr/din/menu/menus.htm

Some restaraunts require you to make priority seating. Some of those restaraunts are: Blue Bayou, Cafe Orleans, Plaza Inn Minnie & Friends breakfast, Ariels Grotto, Wine Country Trattoria, Vineyard room, Goofy's Kitchen, Napa Rose, Story Tellers Cafe.

Disney Dining reservation number: 781-3463

If you dont eat in the park the restaraunts that I LOVE are the Rain Forest Cafe in DTD, or for the Sports fanatic the ESPN sports bar. Or on the strip by the hotels there are also loads of places to eat such as Ihop, Mimi's, Tony Romas, Quiznos, McDonalds, Millies, Denny's.

If you are into pirates or knights in shining armor, then I would definately recommend either the Pirates show or the Medieval Times dinner and tournament. Gray Line bus has the tix and transportation for those.

My Favorite time to Go:

My favorite time to go is the first week of June. The weather is amazing, the schools are still in, the park is open late every night till 11:00 DL 8:00 DCA on Week Days & 12:00am DL and 9:00 on weekends, apposed to DL closing at 8:00pm on off season. Most shows are up and running (Fantasmic, electrical parade etc), and if there were any big ride referbs the chances are they wont be happening during this time.

Wow, I think mystic_path has covered a lot of it. We have never used the DDP in DL - we did use it in WDW. Some other random thoughts...

• Lunch at the Blue Bayou is a must for us. Make your reservation for the first lunch time and you might get seated by the water to watch the Pirates passengers going by.

• We love GCH for its pool and the early entry to DCA to beat the crowd to Soarin'. Having said that, it is quite expensive and there are MANY good hotels right off DLR that are very easy to get to (they will be must closer, for instance, that the hotels are to the parks at WDW).

• Do NOT miss the Electric Light Parade in DCA! It is a classic and still my favorite.

• DTD at DLR is a really nice area and much more compact than the one at WDW. Spend some time there browsing.

• We MUCH prefer to fly to SNA as it is a much smaller and less crowded than LAX, along with being closer to DLR.

• There is a LOT to do in the general area, if it is your first trip to the area, you might consider DLR plus other southern California sites.

• Visiting characters as soon as ToonTown opens is a good way to visit a large chunk of characters in one go.

• Goofy's Kitchen is also a great place to eat and see characters at once.

I will think and add more later, but this is my first brain dump.

I highly recommend staying right our there on Harbor - we got the Entertainment rate at Hojo's for $59/night. That's really only available in the off-season. We go in September b/c the weather is perfect, the crowds are low and the prices are low. The only drawback is that you need to include a weekend if you're going in the off-season because you'll want to see Fantasmic! and the Fireworks.

We have stayed at Anaheim Plaza Hotel - it's decent. Also at the Desert Inn - also decent. I'm excited about staying at Hojo's because it's rated something like #2 or 3 in all of Anaheim hotels at tripadvisor.com. Also, I think by June they will have replaced all the mattresses at the Hojo.

I have stayed at the Disneyland Hotel once...I got the AP rate, and it was fun...but I didn't spend enough time in the room to really justify the expense. I spend most of my time in the parks. On-site is just worth it to me. I'd rather stay within walking distance (which some of the off-site hotels are actually closer than the DLR Hotels), and spend less money, and have extra money for tours or meals.

Also, I do not recommend the dining vouchers for DL. It's not the same as at WDW. You don't save any money. You pay full price for them, they are worth a certain dollar amount, and you don't get change back if you don't spend it all. I used them once, but I got $300 worth of them for about $150 on eBay...THAT was worth it.

Also...park hoppers from getawaytoday.com give you TWO Early Entries (or Magical Mornings) instead of the normal ONE.

We're from Texas and truly prefer DLR to WDW. I hope you enjoy it as much as my family does!

I agree with Flying into John Wayne airport. It's so easy to get in and out of. We take a cab for about $40 one way for my family of 3. We prefer this to shuttles as you get direct fast service.

Your going to love the benefits of the time zones. We always get up super early and have no problems with making rope drop as we have the two hour time difference. You will have the three hours!

It costs a little more but we LOVE the Disneyland hotel. It really makes you feel immersed in Disney magic. That's something we missed at WDW. The only hotel there with Disney themeing was ALL Star Movies. That's where we stayed as DD wanted to stay in Andy's bedroom with all of the great characters. But it was nothing great inside of the rooms. Dinseyland Hotel has a great Peter Pan themed pool

If you have the choice, I would go when the Christmas overlay is up. The park is beautiful and Haunted Mansion and IASW hace the extra touches. Also, Santa is at Big Thunder Mountain Ranch with real reindeer!!
They have a Christmas tour that lasts a couple of hours and it incliudes front of the line for Haunted Mansion and IASW plus VIP seats with goodies for the parade
DON'T get the meal plan. It has no value like the WDW dining plan. If you want to pre pay for your meals, invest in Disney gift cards or Disney dollars. That way, if you have AAA you can get the discounts. You save 10% at Minnie's Breakfast, Goofy's Kitchen, Ariel's Grotto and the Trattoria.

We always do 4 nights and get everything done multiple times. But we take an early flight (7:00 am'ish) that gets us to the hotel, check in, stow our luggage and to the park around 12:00. We come back around 5:30 to get our luggage to the room and eat dinner at Goofy's Kitchen. IMHO I think Goofy's Dinner is better than breakfast.

Definately check out Toontown. It is soooooo much better at DLR than WDW. It's more spread out and surreal. So Cool.

You can check out the menus to the restaurants at allears.net. We do all of the character meals so we don't have to spend so much ride time waiting in lines to meet the characters

We always try to get a late flight out on our last day (6:00 ish) It gets us home late (around 11:00 ish) but we can stay at the park until around 3:30. We check out EARLY before we head to the park for rope drop, leave our bags with the bell captain and grab a cab back to the airport.
We want to squeeze in what we can on the last day!!

Thanks for posting this stuff and to the OP for asking! I am from NJ also, and have been to WDW many times but never ventured to Disneyland! We are planning to take our two boys who will be 4 and 2 next year. We are hitting WDW 4 times this year, with our last time being Nov-Dec 2008. So I am thinking either my son's spring break (mid April) or maybe late May. What are the best times to go? Would it be too much to do Disneyland and other attractions too? I figure we'll go for 7 days...TIA! Sorry to hijack the original thread...but maybe this will help OP too!
