Anyways we got back from Disney on Sat and picked up our dog from the kennel/vet and she can't bark now. This was the first time we kenneled her, she usually goes my DH parents. Not sure if she barked so much that she's lost her voice because when she tries to bark when she needs out its just a little sound.
She used to bark when people came to the door or when she heard anything now she doesn't even try. I'm concerned but I mean the vet obviously knew this since that's where she was boarded. Any suggestions?

It sounds like your dog was likely stressed during the stay and spent a lot of time barking and dogs can loose their voice the same as a person. Hopefully she'll be back to normal soon.

It could be caused by stress, but it could also be Kennel Cough. If she isn't better very quickly or if she starts making any other odd sounds, please give your vet a call. Kennel Cough is very contagious and even if vaccinated, they can pick up similar germs. Did the kennel require that your dog be vaccinated for Kennel Cough? If not, that means that a lot of the other dogs at the kennel were not vaccinated.

The kennel does require your dog to be vaccinated for kennel cough and they require proof. Since that is also were her vet is they have copies of her vaccinations and if she didnt go there they need photo copies. She isn't making any other weird sounds and isn't having breathing problems or anything. She just can't really bark. I just think its weird.

Kennel Cough also known as tracheobronchitis

If he has it, it can affect his "voice"

Don't worry. It's temporary. My dog had the exact same thing after the first week at a kennel, she barked the whole time, it's literally like having laryngitis for us. It'll come back in a couple of days.

Your dog will get her bark back, just enjoy the quiet while you have it... sometimes I wish my Chocolate Lab would lose his bark for a while.....

I can't think it's ok for a dog to lose it's voice from barking at a kennel. I wouldn't assume the vet is aware either. I'd take her in and make them tell you she lost it from continuous barking and I would let them know it was not ok. Would she drink warm fluids? Make her some warm broth. It might soothe her throat.

Ours too. :(

She is going to be 14 years old next month and I swear she is getting senile.

She will just stand still and let out one "woof", every 15 seconds. :( For no reason. Driving me insane. One of my biggest pet peeves is a barking dog. :(

I wouldn't assume that the vet knows either. I worked at a vet that boarded pets in high school and the vet never checked on the pets. It was the high school kids that took care of the boarded animals. I would be worried that your dog has kennel cough, which can be dangerous if left untreated. I would make an appointment to get the dog seen so you can get some antibiotics if necessary.

I agree. My neighbor's dog would always have laryngitis when he came home from the kennel which would resolve itself in a day or two.

My dog has only lost his voice once, and it turned out to be Kennel Cough (or a respiratory infection "like" Kennel Cough) even though he and all the other dogs at the kennel had been vaccinated. His "cough" sounded like a very weird attempt at barking.

(I called the kennel owner, who is also the main worker, to tell her about the kennel cough. She said my dog had not barked a lot. However, the dogs have access to indoor/outdoor runs. It had been a cold, windy, rainy week and my dog had spent any minute possible outside. She closed him indoors at night and if it was pouring outside, but otherwise, he was outdoors. He must have picked up something then. However, after a few days of antibiotics, he was fine.

There are many different germs that can cause these types of illnesses in close quarters like a kennel, so they can get symptoms that differ from "classic" symptoms, even when they are vaccinated (which may not cover all those possible).

It's probably just from barking...but if it were me I would take him in just to be sure.

Called the vet and she said our dog barked a lot and it is probably from that. We have an appointment for Monday just in case. But it does seem a little better today.

Glad it's getting better!! We went to Mexico last weekend and when we landed in Mazatlan I got this frantic call from our daughter who had our youngest dog at the vet. Apparently she was in major pain and would scream if you touched her tail! Vet said she had "swimmers tail" from overworking her tail. :confused3 Sometimes I wish dogs could talk.

My dog too. Not a lab but a Chihuahua . 14 and I think senile too. Barks all the time at nothing. we even have her on zanax for other issues.

My dog LOVED going to the kennel! Every time we picked him up, he was hoarse and exhausted. Barking isn't always a sign of being stressed at the kennel, because my dog barked a lot while he was in the kennel, but he loved it. Just keep an eye on her and as long as she seems okay otherwise, then I wouldn't worry about it unless her bark isn't better in a few days.
