Help on outside wheelchair rental

Has anyone used Medical Travel for wheelchair rentals in Orlando? We were calling around to different companies, and this one seems to have the lowest weekly rate for a standard wheelchair. They have a website at www.medicaltravel.org

My son broke his foot and has a grade II ankle sprain also so his orthopedic surgeon told him no walking on vacation in Disney. We will be pushing him in a regular wheelchair or one of the transport ones which I think is lighter weight. He is only 12, so that should work ok!

Just wondering if anyone has used this company before. They are saving us $18.00 compared to the other rentals that Disney gave us to check out.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't know who Disney recommended, but if you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. The fifth item down is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Within the FAQ Item #2 gives specific information on rental sources which have been used. You might want to check them out as they are very used to dealing with tourists and people on this board have been satisfied with them.

However, I do agree that their prices seem to be lower (at least for ECVs) than anyone else's; I don't know about their wheelchiar prices or the quality of their service. If you do use them, after your trip is over please let us know about the service.

No one has posted about using a wheelchair from that company before on this site, so hopefully you will get some replies. The transport wheelchairs are lighter weight and I have talked with people in the parks who have rented them and like them for that reason.

If he's 12 and pretty tall, the wheelchair or transport wheelchair should work fine. If he's a small 12 yr old, you probably will need a pediatric wheelchair.

Where ever you rent from, think about whether or not he'll need elevating footrests to get his leg up at times. Also (whether he does or doesn't) can they adjust the wheelchair footrests so they are the right height for him to rest his foot on it (this won't be a problem if he is tall). If he has crutches along, he will benefit from having them to get on and off rides. You can get a crutch holder when you rent a wheelchair from one of the off-site companies.

Also, if he just needs to raise his leg and lie down for a while, he would be able to do that in First Aid.

Thank you to everyone that responded to my question. The information was very helpful!

I did call the Grand Floridian and they were so helpful to me. They told me that they have wheelchairs available for guests to use free of charge, but are on a first come first serve basis. The manager I talked to was so nice, that they are putting one aside for us with our reservation. They did tell me that we can also take it out of the hotel to the parks also, so you can't beat a rental for free!!!

That's one of the reasons why we love the Grand Floridian so much! They always go above and beyond for us any time we have stayed there.

Thanks again for the information! :wave2:

I would still take along the phone numbers for the places that rent wheelchairs. It's possible (even though they said they would set one aside for you) that something will happen and it won't be available or the one they have set aside won't work out for your son. The ones from the resorts are basically the same as from the parks - which means if you need any adjustments or need an elevating footrest, you are out of luck.
