Help: No Codes/no go

My DH says if we can't get a cheaper rate for Disney, we may have to go somewhere else where we have seen better deals--like Chicago. Don't get me wrong, I know Disney doesn't owe use codes, but we have been spoiled by them, and it has helped me to get DH down there in the past (he's not a big fan), and he isn't interested in the value resorts. We already have tickets, so the package doesn't really work. How am I going to handle withdrawal? Any tricks to help get me through the summer if we don't go?

If you are a AAA member you can save 10 or 20%. That is better than nothing.

I stayed at the Hyatt in chicago, for $50 bucks a night (rack rate $250!) of course it was a priceline price... I'm a teacher, so I get in to the museums for free, but they have a citypass that allows you to pay one price for all the wonderful museums, there is the American Girl Store, Water Tower Place, GREAT food... horse drawn carriage rides, the boat ride for the tours down the river is AWESOME...

Thanks for the information. We are both teachers. I didn't know we could get discounts. To the others, yes, I thought about leaving him behind . . . but he does most of the driving LOL.

That was probably for a particular hotel and room type. They look them up by hotel and what room you want. That happened when I priced hotels and AKL had no standard AAA rooms for my dates, but it had savannahs.

Why would you not still go & just stay off site? There are many hotels to choose from, you could even go on SkyAuction & try to get a condo for a week. I don't understand why one would not go if they cannot stay onsite I know the "room" is part of the Disney experience, but it isn't everything... for the most part, aren't you not in the room????

They go give discounts to teachers at these hotels. Try that.

That is so sad that he will not want to go because of the money even though it will make you unhappy. Makes me appreciate my hubby more. Whatever I want that makes me happy is what makes him happy. Good luck on your withdrawal.

We are not planning a trip anytime soon, but honestly, without codes or deals, even if we had been planning a trip, I would probably put it off for a while. It is a big deal when Disney doesn't offer room discounts. For example, look at the price difference for a moderate. With a code, you can usually get $79 a night. But without, it's around $130, right? That is a huge difference. I would wait until after the summer and the kick off of the big celebration. It seems like WDW is not having any trouble filling rooms, so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't release any codes right now. I don't think they need to.

For other posters to say that it is selfish of your husband to not want to go to WDW because of the $ isn't fair. Money doesn't grow on trees! I agree with the poster who suggested staying off site. There are lots of lower cost choices available to you if you really want to go to WDW. Otherwise, I'd just put it off for a while and see if codes are available later in the year or next year.

Give the values a try. They really aren't bad at all, in fact we like them (especially Pop Century). We have stayed at many of the resorts, including Deluxe. Frankly, if we are planning to be at the parks a lot, I don't see the need for the more expensive rooms. If we want to relax and hang out a lot, then we prefer the higher price resorts (we are DVC members).

You may be surprised. The value resorts are nice. With AAA you can get a room for under $100 a night and with codes you can sometimes get them for even less.

Thanks for the tips. I know off site is an option, but we do like staying onsite because we can just forget about the outside world for a while, and we don't have to worry about traffic. DH is a great guy and has gone to Disney the last couple of years without complaint; he does, however, have a harder time saying no to a "bargain." Without that aspect, it just makes it harder for me to make my case that it's a good deal, and, of course, the better the rates, the longer we can stay! I'll check out some of the options mentioned here too. Thanks!

I might be in the minority, but I don't think $99/night is all that high. I know I've paid that for a crappy hotel, at the airport, and a little more than that in Gatlinburg, or Vegas.

I do enjoy a discount, like everyone else, but am willing to stay at Pop, with just my 15% AAA price.

Maybe I'm just giving up hope that discounts are coming. I currently have a package at Pop, but am willing to cancel that if the right price comes available. I have to do it by Mon 3/7 though, or I will be charged.

If you don't like the traffic, stay away from Chicago!! There is nothing but traffic here!

We stayed at Pop Century and had a great time. What doesn't your DH like about the values. Maybe we could give you suggestions about how to answer those complaints. If not, I suggest staying offsite. We were looking at cypress pointe for our next trip. It has room for 6, a kitchen, separate master bedroom. All this for around $70. We usually drive, so the transportation isn't an issue. I don't recall if you are driving or flying. If you need to stay somewhere with transportation, I would recommend somewhere on Downtown Disney area. They have better transportation than other offsite places (all day, at 1/2 hour increments - compared to other offsites that only have a few shuttles per day.)

I don't blame you for not wanting to stay offsite. If we couldn't stay onsite, I'd stay home. As a matter of fact, I did just that in August 2003.

I have to also reiterate the Pop Century is a NICE hotel. I have stayed at the Yacht Club, Dolphin, Carribean Beach.......and it was FAR from a disappointment for me. The pool area is so awesome. Anyway, I think some people just get this thing because it is "value" that it isn't going to be good.....

Where does he plan to stay in Chicago that he thinks is cheaper than disney? Everytime I stay downtown there it is at least $200 a night.....

I would also look at off-site before I would cancel. I have stayed at the Hotel Royal Plaza (Yuck don't recommend), the Grovsner (really surprisingly liked it - the outside looked iffy to me but the room was as nice as I've had at any Hyatt - and pool is nice......not disney nice but nice), the Hilton (very nice but more pricey lately).......... and lots of others. While I do think you lose some disney magic .......it is still a really nice time. And most are still so close to the parks that you don't have to drive much. There are some brand new ones just off Lake Buena Vista drive (Lake Buena Vista Suites.....etc)

Well good luck! The thing with those AP discounts too is even if you call right away there is no guarantee you will get that rate. They seem to fill up so fast...
