Help - New Disboard Rules????

Okay, I've been a lurker for a while, but as my trip gets closer, I'm sure I'm gonna be posting lots of questions.

Over the past few weeks I've noticed a lot of disgruntled people on the board...."discussing" lots of heated issues.

I've seen Moderators being supposedly "banned" and other very kind and helpful DISers leave the boards.

Now, I was reading a post about transportation and the name of the company was "*******" out.

Can someone please advise if there are new DISBOARD rules out. This used to be a very nice and helpful board and to be honest, all this bitterness and editing by the Powers to Be is a little unnerving for some of us newbies.

I've read the DISBOARD rules, but something is clearly changing. If anyone can point me to the latest rules, I'd appreciate it.

I am also a relative newbie to the DIS-Boards. I have found some thoroughly enjoyable, friendly posts and advice, but have also become a bit concerned as the time to my cruise (FIRST DCL cruise) ticks down.

But the very sudden rash of "issues" and changing (well, seemingly changing) rules has left me concerned. I find myself coming here more and more, but the last several days have me questioning if I can rely on getting honest, uncensored advice; or even answers to questions (as opposed to a pre-occupation with some behind-the-scenes strife that us "newbies" are clueless about)...

I hope that this is a "bump in the road" and that good feedback from great folks is still to be had...

GlensideGregorys, I grew up just around the corner from you in Wyndmoor. Is the New Kenyon Diner still standing?

I've lived in Ardsley/Glenside for a year at the end of Oct.; not familiar with the Diner, but I'll check around!


But to the point -- I looked up the transportation thread you mentioned; and it was disappointing. For those of us looking for honest and good advice on options, I see company names "blacked out", etc. Doesn't give a good feeling....

MODS or long-timers, what gives? Like the man said, I don't want a whole controversy, but is there something us newer folks should know - or should we hunker down until whatever storm is brewing goes by and then come back with questions???

I would not be overly concerned. I think that you will find the boards every bit as helpful as usual, even if some of the usual characters are seemingly not around (some who leave do come back under different names, etc., sometimes). In addition, and this is the hardest part for many people to understand, the DIS is a private website despite its appearances as just an open public community. That means that sometimes one does not have the same freedoms that one would have in a public place or other public domain. One does not have to like this, but these are the rules of the game and, if one does not wish to play by the rules of the game, one is free to choose not to play. In addition, the website is generously kept alive by a number of commercial sponsors. The powers that be have been very good about open interchanges on the boards, but if a type of interchange threatens the business or viability of the sponsors then, whether we like it or not, those types of interchanges can be discouraged or prohibited. Don't know what happened with the transportation situation, though. UPDATE: A post from one of the Webmasters indicated that the company being asterisked out had repeatedly violated board policies by spamming and popping in advertisements.

I'm not questioning the right of the board owners to dictate the rules. I'm just looking for clarification, as I used to routinely post this type of information. If need be, I can ask people to PM me so that I can give them the info I have without violating the board's rules. I'm not trying to apply the Bill of Rights to this forum. If I know the rules, I can follow them. That's all I'm asking. I've learned a lot from these boards, and after 9 cruises, my main motivation for posting is to pay that forward.

GG's: The New Kenyon was/is a greasy-spoon diner that never closed. I had many a late-night/early morning breakfast there in my younger days. It was on Limekiln Pk., just north of Willow Grove Ave., if memory serves (I haven't lived there in over 10 years).

There are no new rules, Doctor P has it exactly right - if a company name has been added to the word filter it is because it has violated our posting guidelines in the past by being a nuisance and spamming the site. It has absolutely nothing to do with being a competitor of any of our sponsors though

I hadn't realized that this "rule" was in place. Personally, I think it is great. Nothing is worse than have things pop up all over the place. Thanks to disboards for looking out for us!

Oh wow my first thought was "I hope it's not the one I'm using" .......but then I figured if it is, it's ONLY been filtered out because of spamming and stuff (right ?) then that really is not a reason for me to not use them.

Or do I think that a spammer makes for a bad transporter........hmmmm IMHO it certainly makes them sound like they're desperate for business so I guess I woudn't use them

Personally I don't like spammers so I'm glad that there is some sort of code of conduct on here with regard spamming.

Yes, the name was blocked simply because of the spamming, nothing to do with the actual business itself. Basically, we had a very high number of brand new users recommending this company whenever the opportunity arose...all with the same IP address - coincidence huh?

Hence why in the end we had to add the name to the filter.

I am glad that the powers that be here at the Disboards are keeping it nice for all of us. I can't stand pop ups and spam especially ones that keep interrupting important work. (Yes even fun work.) Thanks webmasters for keeping our visits here fun!
