I have never been in a plane before and I am a nervous wreck about flying. :scared1: Does anybody have any good ideas on how to keep myself calm?

Xanax - call your doctor for a prescription.

If you want to work on your fear then check out one of these free online options:

www.fearofflyinghelp.com

www.takingflight.us/forums (message board like this one)

What helps me the most is meeting the pilot before the flight - get to the gate early and ask the gate agent if you can meet the pilot because you are a little nervous. It always makes me feel more at ease if I have met the "driver".

Good luck!

I know exactly how you feel.....I HATE flying....but have got to WDW from Australia (20 hr flight)......with the help of Xanax (just as the other poster suggested). I am a registered nurse, and this drug is very safe if taken as prescribed. It works REALLY well. It makes you feel really relaxed and it stops you from feeling worried. My suggestion is to get some from you Drs and try it before you go...say at night time before bed for a few times, just to see how it affects you. It also helps me to have a little drinkie on the plane (just 1 glass). I have also read all of the fear of flying books and have been on the fear of flying forum. It helps to know what the noises you hear mean etc. There are also a few good podcasts out there..just type into itunes store 'fear of flying'. There is another good podcast that I like called 'Betty in the sky with a suitcase' which is done by a flight attendant and is very funny and interesting to listen to. Best of luck:):wizard:

My DH is very phobic of flying. Since we have been married I hve gotton him to fly 3 times #4 in October (9 years). If you have a primary care Md. they will prescribe you a low dose .25 mg to take for the ride down and one for the ride back. If you have an Ipod some nice soothing music will help you relax. Just know you are not alone:cheer2: but it will be okay.:cool2:
Good luck:thumbsup2

I am afraid of flying. I actually flew for the first time last year. I am lucky that I have a supportive DH who held my hand for as long as i needed it. He has flown a lot (was a paratrooper in the army) and talked me through the entire take off and landing.

When you take off, you will feel pressure on your body as you go faster and faster and start going up. When you level off, you will feel exactly like you are riding in a car. I found that I did better being in a window seat. It helped me feel more in control.

Landing, it happens pretty quick. I don't remember feeling like I was going down, but I could see in the window that the ground was coming closer. When we touched the runway, it was a little bumpy and nerve racking, but it was over super quick.

Also, one day that we flew it was clear and pretty, then when we flew back it was cloudy. It seemed like the clouds caused it to be a little bit bumpy.

Read a lot about flying, I think knowing what is going on makes it a little bit less scary.

Believe it or not but with me I have to look out the window, other wise I will stay a nervous wreck until we land.:scared:

Here's a vote for Ativan! It's been a life-saver for me. Like other posters have said about Xanax, the Ativan simply relaxes you. I've been taking it for a couple of years each time I fly, and I'm getting to the point where I don't think I'll need it any more (but I'll take it next time just in case...).

Good luck to you! I'll bet it's nice to know you're not alone in this!

I will second the vote for Ativan!! I am a very nervous flyer as well we are flying next month and the kids have never flown before so I am trying to figure out how to stay calm and not get nervous n front of them. I do have some ativan I think I will be taking it with me.
