Hello, i'm off to Orlando on Saturday and was thinking about electrical equipment, i know they use a different plug there but is it ok just to use a normal adapter or does it need to be one that sorts the voltage out as well, many thanks
A normal travel adaptor will do but some appliances like hairdryers may be underpowered. Things like shavers and charging up things with batteries like mobile phones, laptops or camera batteries should be fine. Hope you have a great time.
We normally just have the one US adapter and then take a 4 way short extension cable. What with the phone charger, DS lite chargers, hairdryer, shaver etc, etc it works out the best of us.
Have a great time - wish I was getting away from this awful weather too!
You need to check the operating voltage of your equipment - as said above most modern electrical equipment like shavers and battery chargers operate over a wide range of supply voltage (e.g. 100 - 240VAC) so will be OK to use in the US with a suitable plug adapter
Only problems I have had is keeping the plug in the socket! With my Boots adapter with a normal UK plug stuck in the end seems to be too heavy to stay in the rubbish US socket LOL I usually end up having to prop it up with a phone book or Gideons bible (always wondered why they were put in the hotel rooms ).
I actualyl had to deal with the opposite issue when I visited the Philippines, living here in the states we never really think of these things, but here are a few tips:
Make sure that your appliances can run on 110 Volt electricity (although som hotels that cater to international travelers do have outlets with other options available)
Make sure that your plug will fit into a U.S. outlet, we have flat square plugs, except for the ground which is round. If it doesn't fit make sure to bring an adapter.
I would recommend a surge protector if you are brining electronics such as cell phones, laptops, cameras, ipods, etc.
What I would do is buy a power strip there and get one adapter, then when you arrive in the U.S. got a $1.00 store (or something similar, they have them everywhere) and buy a U.S. power strip (unless you can find one there of course), then plug the U.S. power strip into the wall, plug in the adapter into one of it's outlets and plug the U.K. power stip into it, this avoids the being to heavy for the wall issue.
Just a few thoughts on that and yes most modern electronics (Late 90's and newer) will run on the range mentioned before, just check before you go.
