So, today in English, we chose a boring topicv andwrote it on a piece of paper. Our classmates then wrote questions about our topic on our paper. We're supposed to choose the most interesting question, research it, and write a paragraph about it.
My probelm? I chose Twilight.. not exactly research-able. So, I asked my teacher, and she said it's okay to come here for help.
I'd like you guys to answer this question for me: Why is it such a fad?
Thanks in advance; I really appreciate the help!

Hmm, I honestly don't know.
I have no idea why people are so interested in it. It's such a boring/weird story.
Sorry, I was no help at all haha

I despise Twilight with every fiber of my being, but my Twihard little sister said that it's because they all wish they could find a guy who's as perfect as Jacob and Edward (which I think is a big slap in the face to, like, every guy with a personality ever). It's all them imagining themselves as Bella and living vicariously through her.

Yes, I think this is as pathetic as it sounds.

I just asked my friend, who is in love with Jacob Black, about why she and so many people love Twilight. She said "Because, Jacob's perfect and Edward's awesome too. And it's a really interestesting story, if you get past the fact that it's not written the best. Truth is, it's just another something for girls to fangirl over. Well- at least for me!"

Thanks very much, guys! This is all very helpful!! :goodvibes

I think it's one of those hopeless romance stories, and a lot of people love those! Tweens and teens and possibly even adults are able to fall in love with the character and imagine themselves as Bella. She has 2 guys who are basically described as being hott falling over her! A lot of girls love that stuff!

As far as the vampire and werewolf thing, I think that's just a popular thing. Buffy the vampire slayer, True Blood, The Vampire Diaires, The Little Vampire, etc... it's very in and interesting, IMHO! :goodvibes

Personally, I think it's the whole love story idea and having a guy that will protect you and look after you, mixed in with the mysterious and supernatural vampire/shape-shifter elements that make it more interesting.

We had a similar assignment last year. I would be glad to help you:

First off, the whole vampire craze was has been going on for a while. But why is it a fad? I would think it's all the girls that read the series make it a fad. It's like this. One girl reads twilight. She loves it, tells her friends about it. Her friends read it. Then their other friends, and so on. Then it transforms into something that eventually EVERBODY has read and became obsessed with. Girls picture themselves as Bella. Surrounded by sparkly men who seem to be "perfect." I, like many other girls, heard the news about Twilight and bought it and read it and fell in love with Edward. I'm past that stage now. I'm more interested in other books, like the Hunger Games series.
After the craze of Twilight, people began to realize that the girls loved the vampire stories. So guess what happened? Other authors began to write books about vampires. But none are more powerful than Twilight.

You are welcome to use the explanation in the paragraph I just wrote but please, write it in your own words.

Like others have said, it is just one of those "perfect love stories" where every girl can imagine their Bella and find their Edward. Plus it adds a new element to the stereotypical romance novel...vampires and werewolves. Not something that's in everyone, so it sets twilight apart.

Another reason I could kind of see is that twilight began getting popular jut as the HP series was winding down. Now yes I know that many HP fans hate twilight with a burning passion, but like everyone says, HP did get a generation of kids to love reading. So the HP books were ending, kids needed a replacement, and twilight was there for them to get hooked on.

Just to note after all this I'm not into the whole twilight thing but I was at one point...I even still have my team Edward shirt around somewhere.

Thanks guys! And I definitely won't say what you say directly, unless I quote it, as in quotation marks and give you credit. This is really helpful; I really appreciate it. :upsidedow

I believe it's because Bella is such a flat, 1-D shell of a character. Reader's can easily relate to her because she doesn't have any out of the ordinary personality traits, so they are able to step into her character, so to speak, and live out the series as her. Although why anyone would want to be knocked up by a sparkly vampire, even in their mind, is beyond my comprehension.

I agree with both of these.

I'll agree with this. Its hard to relate to fully formed and deeply described characters sometimes. Its easy to pick up the book and bella's description be so vague that you can *be* Bella. The same goes for Edward. She deliberately avoided describing most of his features. We know he has brown hair and brown eyes and is pale. But could you draw him? Before the movies, I mean. The reader can be bella and she can make edward anyone she wants him to be.

And the preteen/teen reading market has always been saturated with romance, so a romance that you can walk into is definitely going to be a hit.

I guess I'll share my personal experience with the series.

About a year before it became popular, a couple of my friends got into it and started spreading the word. They liked it because it was a new way to view the common vampire, and it was a relatively new idea. Or at least the general plot was an old idea revamped to try and fit modern times. Apparently it was an interesting series.

I tried to read the first one but I found the writing to be incredibly sub-par. I own a novel written by a twelve year old and it was 100% more engaging and it was about birds. I brought up the writing with my friends, and they agreed it was fairly awful, but that the plot was somewhat enjoyable. Until whats-his-face knocked her up and she got abused and it all went downhill interest wise.

Most of the fans I know are between the ages of 13-15, and sometimes it makes me wonder if parents know what their kids are reading. Then I discovered moms everywhere also fawn over it, which didn't surprise me since I see mothers being interested in such love stories.

Everyone here says that Bella was written as a 1-D character so that the reader could relate; how, I don't know, but I have a different opinion. To me, Stephanie Myer just wanted to write a self-insert novel where she could live out her fantasy filled with a dismal plot, ridiculous characters, and be fought over by two men who are supposed to be handsome and amazing, but we don't really know because she's bad at describing things.

I can't even comprehend why people wish they were Bella. Why on earth would you want to live with an abusive relationship, get pregnant as a teenager, and be fought over by werewolves and vampires that could potentially be the death of you? Granted I doubt the vampires could do much without teeth (wut) but still.

I'd rather read a book about pirates, or rabbits.

Basically it was a wildfire thing. The word spread, and now 80% of the internet are people who are Twihards, and the other 20% are people who hate Twilight.

Bella is a girl without much depth, she has traits that most girls can relate to. The author describes these unbelievably handsome and mysterious men who are attracted to her (traits that are intriguing). Girls want to be Bella, and beacuse she is a character who sort of encompasses everone, they can jump right into her shoes and live vicariously through her.

The books may have not-so-great writing, but they are easy reads that provide a romantic thrill.

(BTW I read the books and enjoyed them)

I like twilight. It's good.
But I would right about the fan-girls, why they're on Team Edward/Jacob and what is so good about it? :)

BTW, Team Jacob ;)
