Help Needed: Changing reservations

I need some help. I'm a new DVC member and was wondering if you booked a stay and something came up, what happens to those points. I think i've read they go into a holding account or something to that effect. Can you all please give me the details of what happens to points if you change or cancel a reservation. I know I can call member services, but being in California that 3 hour time difference is a pain in the you know what. Thank you very much.

Points only go into Holding if you are forced to cancel less than 31 days prior to your scheduled arrival date. If you cancel 32+ days prior to arrival, the points are simply returned to you with no penalty whatsoever.

Just be sure to keep your usage and/or banking deadlines in mind. Points must be used or banked (subject to a whole different set of guidelines) before the end of your Use Year or they are forfeit.

I agree, this is why Use Year and planning are important. If you have to cancel, the more time you have to bank, reuse or rent the points, the better off your are.

Just to give you a little more detail:

1. If you cancel 31 days or more, all your points are restored to your account into the appropriate Use Year.

2. If you cancel between 1-day ahead and 30 days ahead, all your points are placed in the Holding Account in the appropriate Use Year.

3. If you cancel on the date of Check-In, all your points are forfeited.

4. If you leave early from a vacation after checking in, those remaining points are forfeited.

5. Points put into Holding have special restrictions.

A. Holding points cannot be banked nor borrowed.
B. They will expire at the end of the Use Year if not used.
C. They can be used to make a DVC reservation only within the current use year, and the vacation can only be booked at 60 days or less prior to your check-in date.
D. They can be used for the other Collections (Disney, World Passport, Concierge, Adventurer) only if the reservation is made 60 days or less before your check-in date, AND it's more than 60 days before the end of your Use Year.
