Well I tip the pizza guy because I ordered a pizza. When I am sent flowers I haven't ordered anything as it is a gift. I'v never heard of tipping the flower guy and he comes around quite a bit! He probably thinks I'm a cheap shrew! LOL!

I have always had a problem with the whole custom of tipping being expected. I don't mind leaving a tip for good service, but I resent that my waiter was paid around $2.50 an hour because I am EXPECTED to make up the rest in tips. I agree with the canadian way, it's an incentive to go above and beyond and that's all. I've heard the arguements that paying waiters at least minimum wage would cause meal prices to rise but considering how much we pay already for just DH and I to go out I have a hard time believing that extra $3 and hour will kill the restaurant.

Thank you so much. That's exactly what I've meant. It just only seems to tick people off when I say it and I usually end up flamed big time.

I can never find a way to practically tip the flower delivery people. I don't have my cash out and ready when they get here, like I do with pizza, since I'm not expecting them. (Well, I do when they call, which is nice so I can get the tip out, but it's a pet peeve of mine when they call ahead. I'd rather be surprised by the flowers than by a call from the florist.) I don't keep my purse by the door, so I'd have to open the door for the florist and then close and lock the door while I got the tip since I'm not going back into the house with an open door and a stranger on the porch.

I wouldn't in this case. It's a gift for you from someone. If there is a tip given, it should be included by the giver of the gift.

I would say welcome to the DIS, but a first post insulting a lot of members doesn't really make me want to!

Because not every delivery job is a psotion where the person make less than minimum wage based on the "tipped" position. Flower delivery people are paid a normal wage. (above minimum wage)

Waitresses, bartenders, hotel maids, PIZZA delivery, maybe even couriers, are careers in which they make a tiny base hourly wage. Well under minimum wage, they rely on their tips for their income. I am lucky in that I work for Domino's, so I might make more of a base pay than a private pizza shop. I make $5.25/hour. I know someone who deliver's pizza for a locally owned pizza shop. He doesn't even make a base pay. He gets the delivery charge per customer. At Domino's, they charge the customer $1.00 dleivery charge, yet I only make $.65 customer. Domino's takes the $.35. I have not found out why yet.

So, yes, I depend on my tips from delivering pizza. So, the next time you order delivery for pizza and do not tip the driver, just remember, that is all the less money going home with him that night.

Nope. I know for a fact that the florist charges a pretty hefty delivery charge to the person sending the arrangement.

I have had a part time job delivering flowers and believe me, I was NOT paid minimum wage, I depended on tips to make money. I was lucky most people would tip- there were a few that were caught off guard and didn't tip but typically they would say "Oh can you wait here a minute" then run and get some money. Florists do charge a hefty delivery charge but it certainly doesn't go to the person delivering them!

I tip my pizza delivery people really well. I choose to order and ask for delivery, so I control what I have decided to spend. I tip at restaurants, and I tip at coffee shops. I have decided to go in and order. I am prepared. I did nto choose to order flowers, am not expecting them, and generally am not prepared.

yes, you should always tip someone who does a service for you!

I just ordered flowers for my neighbor as a Thanksgiving gift. I paid $14.95 service charge. I paid dearly for that service, and let me tell you, it was not done well.

I happened to see my neighbor leave teh house. Oh no! It's freakin cold out! So I start watching out the window. THe delivery lady shows up and is knocking in the door, so I run over to accept an arrangement that I could have paid $20 at my grocery store, which woudl have at least put a cellophane sleeve on it. It was not wrapped, it was not protected, and the lady told me it was little because I ordered it from a wire service!

$60 plus tax and delivery. And a snippy delivery lady. I was not happy.

This thread was from 2005, I hope the OP got their flowers by now!

YES, tip the flower delivery person. They are delivering a perishable product. The flowers have to be kept cool and fresh while driving to you. Also they can get jostled around during delivery. They make very little money. Maybe 10 to $12$ per hour. Come on people tip the driver they're not being paid for healthcare, no vacation pay. If you think maybe i should tip this guy, you should. Try it once and see how much appreciation you get.

First, interesting first post to follow up a 14 year old thread that was last responded to three years ago.

Second, assuming your payscale is correct, that's what our entry level employees get paid. What the flowers being perishable or getting jostled around have to do with anything is beyond me.

YES!! Tip the flower delivery person. This is a low wage job. Maybe $10 to $12 per hour. No vacation pay, no healthcare benefits. Like you want your pizza hot....you want your flowers cool and fresh. They get jostled about while driving around and the driver has to adjust them. Drivers usually wipe condensation from your vase and make sure the blooms still look nice. If you're not home they should call and let you know the flowers are waiting. YES, TIP THE DRIVER PEOPLE. Try tipping the driver...they really appreciate it!! Just because flowers are expensive doesn't mean you shouldnt be kind or considerate.
