I'm the mom of a 7th grader and am in charge of 8th grade graduation. (Supposed to be just "helping"...but now I'm fully in charge).

Tonight is our first meeting and we need to decide a "theme" for the 8th graders. Please help me come up with some wonderful themes for an 8th grade graduation!

All I can think of are stupid things. Please help! :listen:

are you looking for a song or book theme? or just a theme? is there a dance too?

here are some thoughts

oh the places you'll go (book)
I hope you dance (country song)
Forever young (there is a song - by Bob Dylan or the one by Rod Stewart)
iT's a jungle out there
"A World of Wonder Awaits!"
the skys the limit

Tropical theme - luau, grass skirts, pink flamingos etc.
Country western - barbeque, cowboy hats etc.
Disco theme - my ds went to a sweet 16 for this
Under the sea - more like the tropical one
Read in the paper that one school around here did it based on willy wonka and the chocolate factory - candy galore, huge paper lollipops etc
Also one year they did arabian knights etc.
I guess you could tie in the food, and entertainment etc. Also look at your budget and how much community donations you could get and parent help etc. You are very brave to be on the committee!!

It is just a regular theme-there doesn't have to be a song to tie in with it.

There is a dance but the 8th graders are going to burn their own CD's and we'll have a dad with a stereo be the DJ.

These are some great ideas.

Luvmary- I'm not just on the committee I'm in charge of the whole thing :earseek:

My theme (in my mind) was Thank God I'll never be back here again!

Serioulsy, we were supposed to have a night on Broadway. But after we rehearsed and sang, and a few days prior to the show, some parent objected to the song "One" (Chorus Line).

We were suddenly given Memories from Cats, since it had recently opened. Out of protest, nobody sang, and only one girl carried the whole song!

I like the luau theme and the Willy Wonka theme. Both would be easy to pull off and had an element of zaniness that 8th graders cannot resist.

My kids' 8th grade graduations were big on glow-in-the-dark paraphenalia. The kids seemed to really like that. I am not creative enough to come up with a theme for glow-in-the-dark, but maybe someone else can.

Lots of glow-in-the-dark stuff in the oriental trading catalog!

How about a cruise theme? You know, because they are "cruising" into the next stage of their life. They can be given tickets to the cruise and you could do a nuatical them.

Just wanted to let you know that this list (well, not Arabian Knights) is still helpful 20 years later. Thanks for the great ideas.

How dressy do the kids get? I know here, the kids get dressy...like homecoming style shorter party dresses and dress shirts/ties for the boys. Just wondering if it's the kind of thing where some people already have their attire set (since some dress orders can take a while).

That being said, we've seen a number of glow in the dark/black light based themes here lately as well. While it was high school, I think our hoco dance this past fall had a neon theme and everything was lit so the kids "glowed." Some kids went as far as having neon dresses, but most of it was just tied into the decor and lighting.

Why do graduations need a theme?
Why do 8th graders need a Graduation ceremony? When I was a kid you Graduated from High School and College. Last day of 6th grade we got a letter saying which Junior High School we were assigned to, and last day of 8th grade we got a letter saying which High School we were assigned to.
My kids, they had Pre-kindergarten graduation, Kindergarten graduation, 6th Grade graduation, 8th grade graduation and a ceremony and gifts always seemed to be dictated.

What a thread blast from the past! I can’t believe I’ve been on the Disboards over 20 years!!

I didn't realize this was old until halfway through - I hope it went well!
