We are painting our kids bathroom, and we're going with a surfer/hawaiian theme. For 3 weeks their bathroom has been torn apart and masked off, but not painted because we can't decide on a color! My dh likes blue or two-toned, my dd likes yellow, I was thinking some sort of seafoam or soft green. Any suggestions? It has to go with this wallpaper border. I should mention that their shower curtain is a bright multi-stripe with yellows, lime green, soft blue, orange and a dark pinkish-red. Also, this is a boy/girl bath! We need to get this painted this weekend so they can start using it. Thanks for your suggestions!

Here's a pic of the shower curtain. I sort of have to coordinate around the border and the curtain. The colors are a bit more muted in person.

I know this kinda sounds boring but how about a soft tan......I think the border is pretty colorful in itself. Either than or I would go with a softer yellow.

I agree with chyam a soft color for the walls to really bring out the colors in the border.

I am on a serious COLOR mission in my house so I think a nice blue would be a good complement to the watery theme of the border. I painted my bathroom Watertown Blue by Benjamin Moore. Not sure if it is on their website.
I love your border, have fun with the painting!

I would paint it that light peachy color in the surfboards. Peach tones are very flattering in bathrooms, where yellows and greens can make you look bad...especially in the morning! And that color peach is not too feminine. I have some walls in my house painted Benjamin Moore "Ivory Tower" which has a peach tone, but isn't too orange. You could look at that or go with something a little deeper.

Good luck!

I'd go with a neutral & pull the tan/beige shade out of the surf boards. Of course, we are pretty conservative when it comes to colors.

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I can't believe I'm having such a hard time, but we're only painting it once! :)

I think going with blue might be too much blue. I would put the border in the middle of the wall and paint the top half yellow and the bottom green. I love color though!! Have fun painting the bathroom--Oh how I love painting behind the toilet tank!! :rotfl:

My dh really likes the two tone look, but I couldn't decide on one color let alone two! All your suggestions sound great. I'm struggling because my dh wants this done this weekend and I have until tomorrow to pick a color. I'm horrible with colors and I almost always hate what I pick when it's on the wall! If you know the names of the paint colors you suggest, please let me know! Thanks so much.

I'd go with the tan on the bottom and match up the blue on the top...that way the border will sort of "float" in the middle.....

just my .02

After seeing the shower curtain I would still have to say a soft tan...sandy color. There is such a thing as overkill on color, between the border and the curtain I think you have enough.

I have to agree. A nice sand color would look great and not clash with the border or the shower curtains.

Thanks for all your ideas and suggestions! Well, it looks like a sand/tan color is what I should be going with. I kind of like the sand on bottom, blue on top idea....guess I need to find a nice sand color though - I just don't want it to look too brown.

I'd go with either that peachy color of the surfboard or the tan of the other surfboard.
I think your border and the shower curtain are going to add enough brightness.
Good luck.

If it was just the border I would do powder blue. But when you add the shower curtain, then I think I would match the sand.

I would DEFINITELY go with a sand color, but see if you can find the new textured ones that actually have the sand "feel" to them. sometimes they are multi toned sand.

The two tone floating thing could be cool too, but I really think the sand texturing all over would be cool. We can't see the way your bathroom is laid out and if you did the two toned thing it could betoo busy the way it is set up with counter height, etc etc...

Let us know what you do and good luck! :sunny:

The textured paint sounds like a great idea, but since it's a bathroom I was sort of leaning toward a semi-gloss paint. I don't know how well the sand texture would hold with all the heat and moisture in there. I will be sure to post pics once I'm done! I'm getting sort of motivated now. :)

Take a piece of the border with you to the paint dept so you can check out how it will look.......good luck...........I absolutely hated painting the bathroom! Maybe a blue on the ceiling would look nice kinda making it look like a sky?

Have you considered placing the border about half way and put the sandy color under it and sponge paint the blue and white above it. It will carry the sand to the floor and the sky to the ceiling.

Lowe's and Home Depot can match the color if you take a piece of the borderwith you when you get the paint.

Happy painting
