HELP!!! Nail Polish on the carpet - any hope???

DD4 spilled nail polish on the carpet today, not just any carpet but champagne colored carpet (almost white). I have told her many, many times to leave the nail polish alone, "I will paint your nails". She got some on one of her favorite outfits a few weeks ago & she was very upset - I thought that would have taught her a lesson but Noooooo... She didn't just spill it, she then (I guess) tried to clean it up & smeared it into the carpet & ended up being a much bigger stain than if she'd come & told me, she then put the top back on & in the bathroom, then put her bean bag on top of that. Is there any hope at getting this dark pink blob out of my carpet???

Oh & then because I wouldn't let her put her soccer cleats, socks & shin gaurds on so she could go outside & play with her new soccer ball - I'M MEAN!!! Go figure

try nail polish remover, and lost of paper towels....

Found this on the net:

nailpolish in white carpet. try using a non oily nailpolish remover.
Gently rub in one direction only, or blot. Be careful with the nail
polish remover that it doesnt sink through your carpet. Or you can mix
some liquid dawn or Joy (you want a non bleaching, non lanolin soap)
with some water. About 2 Tbsp to 1 quart water. Remove excess with a
white paper towel. If you still have some that will not come out. Try
using 3% hydrogen peroxide, moisten the area with it, let sit about an
hr or so. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain free. The light will
change the peroxide to a water so you wont have to rinse it. Just put a
stack of paper towels down and put a heavy brick or something on it to
get all the water out. Good luck! Nail polish is one of the harder
things to get out. Along with oil or even permanent market (though I
had really good luck getting blue permanent marker out of my carpet
with Woolite Oxiclean Carpet Cleaner)

Thanks, I'll give both suggestions a try. At least the stain is in the sitting room part of my bedroom - not many folks go up there, just us.

KristiKelly-- I have been in the same boat! DD now almost 7 could not leave the nail polish alone at 4 and 5. She also spilled some on her favorite outfit and on our carpet, but in our bathroom and only a small spot. I finally had to hide all the nail polish, put it in a basket on the top shelf of my closet behind my sweaters. No matter how many times she got in trouble for getting it out and how sad she was when she wreaked her clothes it was like there was some magnetic force drawing her to a bottle of nail polish whenever she was within 20 feet of one! LOL!
Last weekend I painted my nails and accidentally left the polish on top of the entertainment center. She eagle eye spotted it, climbed up on a stoll and got it and was painting her toenails in the middle of the light tan family room carpet when DH found her. Thank goodness she didn't spill any because it was dark berry polish!! So even two years later, I still have to keep it hidden, sigh, hopefully she'll outgrow it someday.

Be VERY careful with any "home remedies" for cleaning your carpet. DS is certified in carpet cleaning. They have a lot of problems when someone tries to clean a stain themselves. Many times they can not remove a stain that a homeowner has tried to remove before them. Also a lot of products sold in the store will just move the stain deeper into carpet and it becomes harder to get out. I will ask DS when he gets home if he has any suggestions.

I tried everything but could only get some of it out. I ended up giving my carpet a bit of a "haircut." DS was about 2; I had painted my toenails and he was fascinated by it. We all were taking our Sunday afternoon naps; I heard a noise and opened my eyes and DS was painting his entire toes. I lept out of bed so fast I must have looked like a character in a cartoon!

There's no cutting this out. DD, in her attempt to clean it up, smeared it in all the way down to the bottom. We do have some extra pieces of carpet, I guess if all else fails, I could *maybe* cut the entire piece of carpet out & cut an exact piece to put in & staple it to the floor.(???) I haven't had time to attempt anything yet, I figured - no hurry - since it was already dry by the time I discovered it. I'll wait & see if luvdzny has any remedies. Thanks everyone.

Sorry you can't get it out. Maybe before you try cutting it out , call a carpet cleaning company. Maybe they can work some magic. If not, buy a throw rug!

I know this is not the same as nail polish - but here is our story...

We had carpeting put in just before Christmas in our family room. In January we had a fire in the fireplace, and a big chunck of embers popped out. It burned about a 1 1/2 inch hole in the carpeting. For about $38, the carpet store came out and mad a "plug" from the leftover pieces. While I know the general vicinity of where the ember shot out - I can't tell exactly where the problem is - and trust me - I was looking closely.

My other suggestion is - call the carpet store and see what they would recommend.

My 2 year old and her 3 1/2 year old cousin decided it would be fun to take a Sharpee permanent marker that they 'found' on the counter and 'color' a couple of places on our brand new family room carpet, our couch and our recliner. Of course the carpet wasn't even 6 months old. I used one of those oxy clean products (after testing it on some spare carpet first for color fastness) and it worked like a charm. I was sure this permanent marker, since it was permanent, would never come out but it did. All of it came out. I was truly amazed that it worked as well as it did. Needless to say, no pens are ever left out anywhere in the house anymore. Good Luck.

I just talked to DS, he said "good luck!" He also said that sometimes they can get it out of carpet, but it is a tough one. It depends on the fiber of the carpet and a few other things. Anyway, he didn't have any advice to offer. As far as the Oxy stuff, they learned that Oxy is actually one of the worst things to use. It moves the stain deeper into the carpet. You won't have a problem unless you have your carpets professionally cleaned, then it comes to the surface again and sometimes can not be removed. Sorry I can't help - good luck!!!

Thanks anyway. It is dry & has *glued* (I guess) the carpet fibers together. It's directly in front of the TV stand, I might move that a couple of inches to cover it . Or, since I have extra carpet, I might see if a carpet layer would come piece it for me. I wonder if I could do it myself?
