OMG DRAMA!!!!! I sail in 30 something days and my son broke his hand tonight...they called it a "boxer break" I guess due to the knuckle above the pinky finger breaking. Can ANYONE tell me how long this will take to heal or how long he will wear a cast??????? I also want to know if anyone has ever heard of a water proof cast???

I cant change the sail date because my vacation is already slotted and I am not sure Disney would change it or the airlines....oh lord....he is 17 and I cannot picture him not being able to swim......

Why me?????? Any information would be so helpful.....

sigh :sad2:

My boss's 3 year old was placed in a waterproof cast when she broke her wrist. It think he had to pay maybe $50 extra for it instead of a regular one. I didn't see it since he's in San Antonio and I work in Dallas (the wonders of working for a communications company) but he said it worked great.

For a 17 year old, I would definitely check on it since it would simplify his life (and your's too). I've been through the regular cast routine three times with DD - one elbow, one toe (surgery so whole foot in cast) and one ankle (again surgery) and I know how aggravating and inconvenient they can be.

Hope everything works out for you and your DS.

Have they already casted him? Hopefully the doctors can answer these questions for you? What a bummer! I hope it all works out.

After ankle surgery # 5 and 5 months in a leg cast I found the secret for being able to get wet. Ask your orthopaedic cast tech for a shower sleeve, they are like a big ummmmm, well you adults know what I mean. They work great, I was able to take showers and keep my cast perfectly dry. You will need a second person to help you put it on, they are very snug at the top opening. My techs gave me a new one every month and insurance covered the costs.

Good Luck,

Kim

Most casts are fiberglass which is waterproof. You need a Gortx liner. They usually don't offer if because insurance wont pay the additional(maybe $30-50) but if you ask for it and pay the additional, they can. It won't have the cotton batting inside, just the Gortx. He would be able to swim, shower etc. without a second thought.

I'll echo what my3kids said (since I have triplets myself :D ).

A fiberglass cast with a gortex lining will be just fine.

My son broke his wrist in the parking lot of the Saratoga Springs Resort the FIRST day of our trip to WDW (long story).

He was just fine in the pool and wasn't unable to do anything after a day or so of some pain and discomfort.

After 30 days, your son will not have a problem at all. Don't fret.

Thank you everyone....soo much for your advice.

He is not casted yet, have to go to an ortho today and get it all done. I will certainly ask for a waterproof something, and gladly pay for it if it makes my son happy lol.

Thanks again for the responses.....:)

Definitely go for the gortex lining. My DS broke his wrist while on a summer vacation and DD broke her thumb just 2 days before our July Disney trip. Your other option is something called xerosox. It's a sleeve that covers the cast and you pump all the air out. We've tried it, but it was very awkward to use. You can check them out at www.xerosox.com

my daughter broke her arm on December 8th. my first thought after "is she okay?" was "OMG, the cruise?"

is that bad?? :sad2:

then i counted the weeks and she would have her cast off on the 19th..ish of january for 6 weeks.

well, it turns out that the pediatric ortho doesn't believe in having them immobilized for that long. new to me but..okay....he's the doc. she gets her pins out and cast off on Dec. 30th and as long as i don't catch her trying cartwheels in the living room, she won't have another cast. :cheer2:

ask the doc but there shouldn't be any reason why he couldn't get a waterproof cast. i was going to have one put on out-of-pocket if i had to. he also shouldn't have any pain by then.

good luck!

toopure4u,

where in NJ? we're by great adventure. which cruise u b on??

jan 29th western here.

NJdrum - glad you found your way over here. Toopure is on the same cruise as you. We were on the same Eastern last year and had a lot of fun at bingo and didn't even know it.

Toopure, hope your son gets better real quick. You will still have a great time.

NJDRUMRUN I live in Beachwood...next town over from Toms River. We will be on the same cruise as you.....I look so forward to it.....

What are the age(s) of your child(ren)? lol

Thanks everyone for your advice....sure did help calm me down!!!

TheWog...if you hurry you can still book and go with us!!!!!!!!

I would really really love to!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just jump off The Enchantment and run up to Port Canaveral for the most beautiful ship... what a vacation that would be.

You guys go, have fun and I will live vicariously through your reports when you return.

6 weeks is the biological clock for the reparation of human cells. I broke my 5th metacarpal (knuckle above pinky) and I could'nt swing a bat etc. for weeks but fiberglass casting or plastic bagging will help in the water. This injury is barely limiting so enjoy!

toopure...jackson, look...we're neighbors! daughter is 6. got her pins out yesterday. doc sent them home as a sovenier. pretty weird seeing them sticking out of her arm....eeewwww! the arm is stiff but she'll be in great shape by the cruise. swimming is the only thing she is allowed to do until then. YEAH!! off to the Y we go!

you have a 17 y.o. son. any others?

79 degrees in grand cayman this morning!

Yes NJ....def neighbors....

Yikes....the pins stuck out of her arm??? Wow. I hope my son gets this cast off by cruise time.

Where is your cabin on board?? We are on the 1st floor cat 10. My son and his gf are the only two going with me....17 years old each. Looking forward to a great time!!!!!
