I have a 5-month-old malti-poo. Last night she was laying under the recliner. My daughter didn't know it and slammed the feet of the recliner down on her leg! I thought it was broken, but when they x-rayed it, her hip was dislocated. She's going to stay there today and get heavily sedated to put it back in. Then she's going to need some sort of sling for probably a month. I'm not sure if they're talking about one of those slings with the wheels on it or what.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I don't have any experience with this, just wanted to let you know how sorry I am this happened and hope everything turns out ok. :grouphug:

When I was a kid we had a dog that dislocated her hip playing with a tennis ball. We had to keep her confined for a month (we used my brothers old baby crib) and since she wasn't allowed to walk she had to wear a kind of diaper. She was fine and healed up perfectly.

I hope everything goes well for your dog...I'm sure it will.

Ok...that's comforting to know. I'm waiting for the vet to call with an update this afternoon.

Well, the puppy is home from her stay with the vet. All in all, I guess we're ok. They put the hip back in and she has to stay in a splint for a month. It kind of hikes up her leg so it's tucked under her all the time. She looks soooo pitiful, especially when she tries to hobble around and go potty.

She's on doggie Morphine and some anti-inflammatory medicine. And I can give her a sedative to keep her quiet. No jumping and running around.

And I'm $500 poorer. :scared1:

Oh well...she's worth it.

Poor puppy!

Your daughter must feel awful. Our dogs always lay under the recliner too. It's so easy to go to put the foot thing down without realizing they are there.

Our older Sheltie dislocated his hip trying to get off our bed when he was younger. The vet put him in a sling but it (the hip) kept popping out of it's socket. They had to do surgery on him and created a new ball and socket for him. He's fine now - it was a long recooperation time for him. He has a slight limp and when he runs he keeps his two hind legs together and looks like a bunny hopping.

Just keep a good eye on puppy for any issues.
