Hi all-

We took Casey to the dog park yesterday. We usually take her once or twice a week and there's no problem. The again, it's not usually as full as it was yesterday right after work hours.

When we brought her home, we noticed that she had bled on the towel she was sitting on in the back seat. We got her inside and took a close look. She had skinned just about everything off her front dew claw pads, and skinned hair and flesh off one back leg (around the "knee joint" area). There was one dog that she was racing around with. We think she may have skinned everythign when she came running to us on the cement-- think she may have slid on it when she put the brakes on.

She's a Golden Retriever (Golden ******** ;)), so she had the big black pads. The black "fluffy" stuff is actually peeling off and revealing bright pink skin- which I am sure is sensitive. She didn't like it too much when we cleaned the wounds up last night, but after that, really paid no attention to them. This morning though, she can't stop lapping them. I tried giving her the Kong with peanut butter in it (her favorite treat) and she ignored it instead to care for the wounds.

Is there anything we can put on the wounds to make them heal faster? Should I be wrapping her with gauze to keep her from lapping? Or, let nature and her take their course and do what they need to do?

Usually, we're home all weekend and can keep an eye on her. We have a wedding all day Saturday and houseguests who would like to go into town on Sunday.

Thanks so much- from me and Case!
xoxo

Why don't you call your vet's office and ask?

"Degloving" requires immediate vet attention, or she could end up losing the paw pads. Please take her to your vet or an emergency vet ASAP.

Definitley at least call your vet. Some wounds need to air out while some need to be covered. I'd think a triple antibiotic cream would work, but it would be better to ask.
I hate dew claws by the way.

I have a border collie that rips up his pads all the time. Go to the vet. They will wrap the foot/feet. It's painful for them. She needs to go.

I wrap my dogs paws and legs with an adhesive ace bandage before we go to parks, etc. that have cement areas now. He looks like he's ready for a football game.

I couldn'ta gree more, she needs to be seen by the vet. If she slid on concrete she could have gotten all sorts of gravel and such int the wounds where it needs to be removed and cleaned deeply--you can't do this, and she could get infected.

It's a lot easier (and cheaper!) to do wound care before a systemic infection starts.
