ok - I am going to the site and logging back in and it is still saying to pay $29.95 when I go to file - please help - how are you all getting it free?
go to the irs.gov site its the federal tax site. it gives links to various online tax preparation services taxact. com is supposed to be free as well as good. on some it may depend on what forms you need to use but check it out
good luck
It was free for me because I filed Single Head of Household, and had an adjusted gross income below $35,500. I am not sure what the threshhold is for non head of households or married folks. Perhaps another poster will provide that info.
I always use taxactonline.com. It is free to use and only costs a $7.95 federal and state filing fee. It is really fast--I filed last Tuesday and already have my state refund in my bank account and my federal refund will be deposited on Friday. Great site!!
If you go to the IRS website, click on free file, then start, then there is an area where it helps you find a free service. You just answer some questions and it will give you the links to sites that are free. I did mine through TurboTax, it was free just because I live in NY, no income requirements, nothing!
You just have to be sure that you access it throught the IRS website.
I did my in-laws taxes and sent them in Tuesday. I did them thru irs.gov and then clicked the link for TurboTax. They got their federal done free (their annual gross was OVER $60K) and they had to pay for their state--$19.95.
