Help me with DH's 40th birthday--need cheap supplies/favors/invitation wording help

I posted this on the BB too, just trying to get some other ideas from the CB folks..........

Having DH's 40th birthday party at a restaurant next month. I'd like to get some decorations for the tables, and maybe some cheapy/fun favors for guests. But have you checked out prices for 40th birthday stuff---everything's crazy!!

Also, I'll be buying heavy appetizers and soft drinks for everyone that's coming, it's just a drop in party (will just keep them coming and full, so people can snack while they visit).....BUT, I frankly won't be able to afford everyone's alcohol. Especially DH's friends alcohol.

How can I word that on the invitation?? "Appetizers and soft drinks on me, alcohol on you" doesn't sound very festive??

Anything you used that's funny/crazy/rude/fun.......let me know!!

Try the dollar store, especially if you have a party dollar store near you. Its mostly kiddie stuff, but you may get lucky. Also, if its in a month, maybe do caramel apples or something like that - the minnie ones

A candy buffet is a great favor! Fill bowls with candy, scoops and have bags to fill up. You can candy and a bulk place on the net or get at a CVS, etc on sale.

I used groovycandies.com for my wedding. You could do retro candy for a 40th...flying saucers were the biggest hit.

Why not make the decorations? You could use oaktag an make 40 signs, you could photocopy his picture saying Look who's 40! and put them all around town on his route to work. You could also make big photoboards with pictures through the years.
