I surprised my son last year with a scavenger hunt. I wrote out a little story about a kid (like him) and called him Speed Reader XXXX (last name). I wrote it about how it was his next-to-last day of school (the day we were surprising him) and he was looking forward to being out of school and all the things he had planned for the summer... but that his mom had other plans. Then, each clue led him to the next thing to do to get ready for school ... from his room, to his clothes to get dressed for school, to the kitchen for breakfast, to the bathroom to brush his teeth, to his backpack (which was empty except for a new DS game for the trip), to his lunchbox (also empty - and the clue said we'd "eat on the road"), then finally to his (packed) suitcase and to his seat in the car, which let him know that "by day's end, you'll be all "ears" and you'll say "cheers" and all your "wishes" have come true!" It was great fun and he loved it. Good luck!
