I recently moved and have noticed stricter sorting of my recycling boxes... I was very sad to learn that my city does not recycle single serving 100g yogurt containers. I checked all of them in my local grocery store, and none of the bulk boxes of individual sized 100g yogurts had a recycling symbol on the bottom!

I found this on the U of Guelph website (not where I live, but still helpful):

"Yogurt containers fall into two basic categories: tubs, and single serve cups. Most tubs, with real lids, are plastic #5, PP, polypropylene and are recyclable. The single serve cups can be made of several different kinds of plastic. Some are also made of #5 plastic, and are recyclable, but many are made of an unlabelled softer, weaker plastic. These "unknown" plastics are not welcome in the recycling stream, so these yogurt containers are garbage. Single serve cups are usually topped with plasticized foil which is not recylable."

I checked the single serving 175g yogurts that are sold individually, and these are recyclable. BUT, they were few and far between. Does anyone have a favourite brand of yogurt that comes in individual sized and recyclable packages??

Thanks!!

I have 2 ideas.

1. Buy the larger tubs. If you are taking yogurt to work or school put it in an individual size container, tupperware for example. That way you can recycle the larger tub and it is often cheaper to buy the bigger container.

2. Schools often take the small containers for projects. They are great for paint in art or maybe when the kids plant seeds for science.

Have a good day.
