What's that simple recipe from Steel Magnolias for that dessert they were talking about in Truvy's shop? Was it a cup of flour, a cup of sugar, and a cup of fruit cocktail? What was the temperature to bake at? Thank you.

Someone gave me a recipe for making alfredo sauce that involved flour, butter, and milk, but I don't remember measurements...does anyone know that recipe too?

Here is the Steel Magnolias one:

Cuppa Cake
1 cup fruit cocktail in heavy syrup
1 cup self rising flour

1 cup white sugar (or 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup white sugar)

Mix ingredients and bake in 8" square pan at 350 degrees until golden brown and bubbly.
Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Hi Tiggerlover, I can't help you with the steel magnolias recipe, but I can help you with the alfredo!

First off, I would not use flour in an alfredo sauce--it might make it pasty and thick. I make two versions of alfredo--one with cream, one without, and neither healthy!

No cream version:
8 ounces linguini, cooked until al dente, drained, with a cup of the cooking water reserved
5 tbsp. butter, cut into bits
1 cup freshly grated authentic parmesean
salt and pepper to taste

Immediately after draining the pasta, toss the fettucini with the butter until melted, then add 3/4 cup cheese, tossing in a small handful at a time and thinning with the pasta water to maintain the consistency you desire (you won't use all of the water). Season with salt and pepper to taste and pass the remaining cheese at the table.

For the cream version, I use the same ingredients, but bring a cup of heavy cream to the boil, then reduce it over medium heat to about 3/4 cup, then use the hot cream in place of the pasta water. This version is a little creamier.

Both serve 4 people as a first course.
