Hi all,
I having such a hard time choosing which time to go, but these are the two sets of dates I'm between. (We chose based on the kids' school vacations) so it would be check in on January 15, check out January 22 OR check in February 10, check out February 16. Mostly need help based on crowd level during each time. Thanks in advance!

I think both weeks will be similar. January may be the slightest bit lower in crowds but not by much. Do whichever works best for you!

January will likely have less crowds, but probably also shorter hours and some ride closures in some cases. Both are likely fine weeks. Do what works best for your family and maybe which week is less expensive or has better resort availability.

Jan 22nd is MLK day and I think most school kids will be off on that Monday. The weekend could be busier because of this. You're other set of dates is over Presidents Day and there may be similar issues on the weekend, but the difference is your trip in February will just be starting. If the weekend is busy you'll still have a few days before you head home. Just something to think about - I'm sure there are others who have been there over these time periods recently that can give you a better idea on what to expect.

We went that same January week this past year, the 14-21st. Sandwiched right in between Marathon weekend and MLK. It was as perfect week!! Low crowds and it was in the 80's every day. I would definitely go at this time again. I've never been in February before though.

Jan 15th is MLK Day for 2018

I have the same dilemma, I chose to visit around MLK day. For me it was cheaper to arrive the Sunday before and leave on Thursday. It's less expensive this way for me for the flight and for the resort costs. Did you see the Family Magic Package special offer going on now? I jumped on that deal, it helped me decide.

I'd go with Jan b/c of Mardi Gras, but FWIW I was there Jan 10-18 IIRC in 2015: midweek, crowd levels projected of 1 or 2 each day, it still felt packed and by noon still waited for rides. (They use far fewer ride 'cars,' for example, when the crowds are lower.) I.e., its not going to be empty either week.

I have quite a bit of experience going both weeks. There's no such thing as an ideal week, only pros and cons and your priorities.

My top priorities: prices, weather, convenient (for us), crowds, ride closures.

Choosing between your two weeks is easy. Pick the one that costs LESS!

Crowds are never my top concern, because we can always navigate around them. Higher crowds generally = longer park hours. Longer park hours = more flexibility. As long as your family can use the peripheral park hours, crowds are no big deal. To me, short park hours are no fun. The parks are best after dark.

When MK closes at 7pm, we don't feel like we've gotten our $'s worth. Afternoon breaks are really out, and just ugh! Closed parks = boring nights.

Weather wise, Jan and Feb are similar, but February tends to be a bit colder. ALSO- very important- blizzards are common in both months, especially February. If you are flying to FL, cancelled/delayed flights are common if a big storm is sweeping the USA. those storms never hit Orlando, but they = cancelled Florida flights- because planes can't get TO Florida anytime a storm hits one of the big US cities. Either week, you'll have to pack extra layers.

If you go to Florida in winter, budget for the possibility that you might be stranded there an extra day. It has happened to us a number of times in both January and February. While it sounds fun, in reality, you spend half the day on the phone on hold trying to rebook your flight/car/hotel. None of them are eager to offer discounts, either.

Crowd-wise, your two picks are similar. Pres week is a little busier- because folks stay all week. MLK Jr week crowds peek over the weekend, then drop. When choosing either, your best bet - if possible - is to slightly straddle your visit and go a day early or stay a day late. Missing one day of school pay big dividends when it comes to prices and crowds.

Make your low crowd days commando MK days (do as many e-rides as possible, use all the park hours). On high crowd days, avoid MK and/or spend more time doing low-crowd rides and shows, do your 3 FP, maybe do non-theme park activities, etc.

I won't swim when I see steam coming off the pool or frost. If swimming is a priority- I suggest taking advantage of the warm days you get. Or just skip swimming and water rides. It is no big deal to have Kali River Rapids closed when it is 50 degrees outside. Expect the wet rides to be closed. Plan to see them on another trip. some trips, our first day is warm and that's it. Forecasts don't pan out.

Last, it is worth mentioning a few other items. In addition to those already mentioned: January= football playoffs. Feb can = overlap with the Daytona 500. (an hour form Orlando and = some folks go to both)

In 2018, MLK Day is January 15. President's Day is February 19. Both these days mean a long weekend for many school systems. You'll miss the weekend crowds for both of these! I might lean towards January because of Mardi Gras, but isn't that usually a bigger deal at Universal than WDW? Honestly, I'd go whenever it's most affordable!

I don’t know about Universal. There is no celebration at WDW or anything, but A LOT of ppl from Louisiana go then. It’s the preferred time to go b/c school & work are out & it’s not hot like summer. I have been 3 times during Mardi Gras week since 2008 & every time had been packed! If you’re not concerned about crowds then I wouldn’t base it on that, but if you are, know that it absolutely will be packed!

Being that you're going based on the kids school calendar, you're kinda "up the creek" either way. A lot of parents have these same options, so these 'getaway' vacation weeks make things worse. They don't impact the crowd calendars, but given weather in certain areas of the country, it could totally set things off. As others have stated, you need to look at the other events going on. January is going to have Tour Groups, yes, the flags will be out in force. February is Mardi Gras, the people escaping the celebration will be heading to Disney.

Ultimately, as others have said, if ones cheaper, go then. There's pros and cons. You just have to weigh them and hope it all works out. That said, I'd take January.
