I can’t decide what to do in Ketchikan. It will be me, DH, DS 10 and DS 7 (which eliminates zip lining)
I was considering the Bering Sea Crab fisherman’s tour but it seems pricey for what it is. I am scared to ride in float planes so that eliminates Misty Fjord float tour. Right now I am deciding between:
1. Sea Kayaking (with SE sea Kayaks)
2. Bering Sea crab tour
3. Lumberjack show
4. Other recommendations?

We really enjoyed Bering sea crab tour. The best part for me was when they stop and feed the bald eagles. They are thicker than sea gulls at that spot. We did nothing else in Ketchikan.

You can book Lumberjack show day of. We thought about it and decided to play it by ear. I'm glad we didn't book ahead b/c by the time we did our morning excursion (rainforest walk) we decided we wanted to explore the city vs. go to the show. The Lumberjack theater is within walking distance of the ship. If you are adventurous the place we did the rainforest walk also has a zip line adventure that got great reviews, we rode the bus back with that group. I would have lOVED to do it but we were with my parents and younger kiddos at the time.

Have you asked your 7yo? We are going with extended family in June; the kids in our group all have differing opinions. Part of our group is doing the sea kayaking (the 2 person one that can't flip b/c this was my 6yo niece's top pick for an excursion at ANY port). The rest of our group is playing it by ear with the intention of going to the Lumberjack show. If it matters, only one show is the Disney version with characters added in. The funny part is that they sell the tix on the Lumberjack web-site too, so really - any cruise ship passenger (DCL or otherwise) seems to be able to buy a ticket to it! In any case, that didn't much matter to us, as we'd prefer flexibility to go to whichever show we want. So we'll buy day-of. Other things the "play it by ear" portion of my group tentatively plans to do is take the free shuttle around town (to see totem poles, etc), and probably go to the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, especially if it's raining. http://www.experienceketchikan.com/southeast-alaska-discovery-center.html

your son will probably love the lumberjack show..
we went to the show and we were four adults...
it's cornball fun....we enjoyed it....and the kids in the audience were totally into it and had a great time...

we went there on our own, not as part of an excursion..
it's walking distance from the pier...

If anyone in your family enjoys fishing we loved the Knudson Cove Salmon Fishing excursion. As an added bonus you get to see some spectacular scenery as you fish. We caught five gorgeous salmon that we had processed and shipped home.

We did the KE05 excursion in 2014. It is the lumberjack show and the Potlatch totem pole park. My dd was 6 yrs old at the time. We all enjoyed both places.

We booked a Misty Fjords flightseeing tour via Island Wings and are looking forward to it.

We sea kayaked with SE Sea Kayaks this past summer. It was wonderful and our whole family loved it!
All the positives: super convenient (located right off the ship), affordable, not a huge time commitment, active, adventurous, BEAUTIFUL!
The SE Sea Kayak Company is awesome to work with, so friendly and our guide was very good.
I highly recommend it!

If you are visiting Grouse Mountain.... the lumberjack show is free.

We did that a few years ago with SeaWind Aviation and it was a blast! I hate flying in small planes, but I felt so peaceful and calm. I almost felt like I was an eagle gliding through the air. Now wife almost threw up, but the rest of our group had a blast.

We saved a ton of money by booking directly instead of through DCL. There are a ton of companies in Ketchikan offering sea plane trips.

Have done both kayaking and the crab tour, and enjoyed both very much. The downside to kayaking is the possibility of poor weather in Ketchikan. The day we were there it was misty and rainy. The kayaking was fun and we did see some wildlife, but it was also pretty cold, and my sister-in-law and several other people in the group were miserable the entire time. The crab tour boat has some open air seating, but quite a bit of it is under cover. So even if it's a cold or rainy day you'd still be able to enjoy the experience.

We did this as well with our DS when he was 5 and we all really enjoyed both activities!
