Help Me Pick A DVD Recorder

We're planning on buying a DVD recorder for Christmas, but DH and I don't know anything about them.

What does it mean when it says...
Records to DVD-R
Records to DVD-RW (video)
Records to DVD-RW (VR)
Records to DVD+R
Records to DVD+RW
Records to DVD-RAM

What's the difference? Which is better?

I think that you aren't getting any answers because you haven't provided quite enough information.

Are you buying a standalone DVD recorder or a DVD recorder for a PC?

DVD-R, DVD+R, etc are just different types of media. It was much easier with recordable CDs because there was a single format to deal with. As to which is better, that is very subjective.
