I am going to buy a new camera from Amazon today. I am trying to decide between two. The cost is not enough of a factor, and I just can't decide. It is between these two models, because they are small and because they have great optical zoom. Opinions please.

I have a fairly new Sony (like got it in May). I hate it. It only has a 3X optical zoom, and I can't take pictures of the girls at soccer.

I love my Panasonic. I have the TZ5 which is the older version. It is small enough to fit in my purse, but 10X zoom.

According to CR, the sony received a score of 72 and the panasonic a 69. The panasonic got dinged on the delay in taking the first shot (from the time you turn it on until it's ready to shoot). Everything else looked pretty comparable bwtn the 2.

It looks like either one would work well for you. Are you buying from amazon? If so, the sony is sold by one of their affiliates.

Happy shopping!!

I am buying from Amazon - no shipping and no tax! I suppose I should make sure the affiliate is also out of state and free shipping. But, sitll I want to get the best camera.

What is CR?

DW has an older model of the panasonic. The shutter lag on hers is negligible. That is one of the main reasons she selected it.

The only downside to having it is that when you forget your battery, you can't buy a new one in WDW. I speak from experience.

For that reason, I think that I would get an extra battery.

I have the older model Panasonic Lumix and I really like it. The battery really hasn't been an issue for me - it holds a charge for quite a while. I just charge it overnight and it's good to go for the whole next day. I've never had it die on me! I've been really happy with it.

Canon 5D Mark II or a Canon 7D!!

I have several digital cameras ranging from a cheapo Olympus to a Canon Digital SLR and I've been using digital cameras since the days of the 1/2 Megapixel Kodak’s.

The Sony seems to be very highly rated. The sample photos look great, but they always do. The one issue I would have with the Sony (and why I never buy Sony products if I can avoid it) is that it uses its own proprietary type of memory. I know that it is relatively common these days but SD is far more common. For example almost every laptop has a built in SD reader. Only a Sony MAY have and memory stick slot. (my Sony laptop does not) If you have a Sony TV it may have an memory stick reader, but many TVs have an SD reader.

I have a Panasonic Lumix FX150 and have to say I am not thrilled with the quality of the images. With a Lumix lens you would expect it to have a nice sharp picture, but they squeezed way too many pixels on to the sensor.
The one you are looking at is only 10 megapixels so it may not be as bad. Battery life was not bad at all, but a backup never hurts.
In addition the photos need a lot of adjusting after the fact to make them pop. I expect a point in shoot to take nice photos with little or no post processing.

I would recommend going to the local shop and touching the cameras if you can.
Sometimes they seem very small, but you may find that it will not fit in your pocket.
For example the lens of the Sony looks like it may be an issue when you put it in your pocket. I think the Panasonic will fit in a pocket no problem, it looks very similar to the FX150.

Not to confuse you more but for other brands to consider I have several Canon overall and really like them, but I am very disappointed with the picture quality and build quality of the SD1200. (the SD1100 was much better, but that is no longer made)

Before you buy I would take a look at this site. http://www.dpreview.com/
They have sample images from most cameras, in depth reviews and forums for each brand.

Another good site is http://www.steves-digicams.com/ he has recommendations at each price point and he has been around for years.

One last thing. Make sure you use the camera for several days before you go.
I purchased the Canon SD1200 before my trip to Europe last summer and it died on the 54th picture. I had taken about 30 at home just to get used to it, so I assumed it would be OK. Luckily I had the Panasonic as a backup. So if you have an old one bring it just in case.

Won't fit in a pocket ;) and it is really a pain to carry around Disney or anywhere IMO.
The photo quality is amazing though.
I can't find a compact point and shoot that comes close. (I don't expect too, but something remotely close would be nice.)

Tony, I was kidding. That was my dry sense of humor kicking in. But, I use the Canon SX1IS as my "small, back-up" camera. It is as close to a DSLR as you can get, plus HD Video 1080P at 30 fps. love it

I use cnet.com to get reviews on all things electronics, especially cameras. They are a good site, because they arn't selling anything, but they will list the places that are selling what you are looking for, so you can compare prices in one location.

I have last year's Panasonic Lumix, the TZ5. I really like the wide angle / zoom on it. It is plenty compact enough. Not very tiny like the cameras that are smaller than a deck of cards.

I knew that, it was also my dry sense of humor to respond.
I don't think anyone sane person would recommend a pro camera to someone looking at a point and shoot.

I'll have to go look at the SX1IS when I get a chance.

How is the size of the SX1IS? I have a Pro1 but it is just too big to be convenient to carry.
That’s why I like the SD1200, the problem is it is a piece of junk build wise and picture quality wise. A strong wind on the west coast of Ireland knocked the lens out of alignment and it died the first day of my vacation.

Also is the SX1IS made in Japan or China?
I had the SD1100 that was made in Japan (first run) and it was great.
I replaced it with the SD1200 that was made in China and I hate it.
I also heard there were issues with the SD1100s that were made in China (Second or Third run).

I use a Canon SD Series for a pocket camera, love it even if it is 4 years old. I only buy canon though, so I'm a bit biased. I've owned Olympus, Nikon, Sony and Panasonic and Canon has been the best for me.

Also, Nicole don't worry too much about zoom, if you get a solid megapixel count you can crop and zoom after taking photos. Another point, if you want to get a small camera to take photos of sports...good luck. Won't happen. Sure you'll get some shots, but if you want a camera to take photos of kids playing sports (indoors is the worst) then a dSLR is the only way to go. Pocket cameras just don't cut it.
